I'm building a 7x57 rifle. It was going to have a longer barrel, but I'm redesigning it with a 20.5" with Mannlicher style stock. What I need to know is how tall should the front sight be? I've got a NECG Masterpiece Rounded Ramp and need to know what is the best height for the sight insert? The rear sight will be an aperture, probably a Lyman model 57.

Thanks for your help guys, Eley.

The one that works best......Seriously.

Go to XS Sights' site and call 'em up and order a package of 3/8ths plastic test post sights. Go to the range and start snipping off the sight until it is zeroed, then call XS and order one of their excellent partridge "white-stripe" front sight posts of the proper height. No-fuss, no math, no [bleep]-up. You try any other method, and you'll likely regret it. Gunsmith "formulas" never work.

Your front sight height will be determined by the height of the rear sight. Set the rear at the level that you want and then use the cut and try method on the front. The front will need to be a bit lower with respect to the bore line than the rear, the amount depending on the sight spacing and zero range. You can probably do some calculations and get the front pretty close.

True, but the height of both the front and rear sight will need to consider the height of the stock comb as well.

The higher the comb is, the higher the sight line needs to be over the bore.
