My buddy and I are headed to Montana tomorrow morning for our first PD shoot. In checking weather sites we see where we can expect rain for three of the four days we will be there.

Great.

I assume that the little buggers hole up during a rain, but how does the weather effect their behaviour prior to a storm and just after? What have you folks seen happen?

Not much we can do about it, but am curious as to what might be expected. We're bringing along some reading to catch up on, a deck of cards, etc. but hoping to get some shooting in. In any event, it will be good to get away from phones, women folk, etc. for a stretch.

I'd say when the sun comes out , the dogs will come out........your bigger problem though , if the country gets a decent amount of rain it will be tough or impossible to get your vehicle out into the dog towns due to mud , and E. Montana is known for real slimey sticky gumbo if it gets wet.........

Always an issue when it rains in Montana. Doesn't matter if it's flat or not. No go in the goo.

If the sun pops out often enough and the rain subsides, it does dry out pretty quickly. But I don't expect the 3-4 days you're there will be quite enough.

The positive part - there's always yotes'! Take your calls and make the best of your trip.

Good luck.

Was doggin in CO.

Before rain, dogs were out, rain came dogs went in.

10 min after rain left and sun out, dogs came out in force!

the problem is, as stated, getting in and out of the mud!

Thanks for the replies...think I've got a call around here somewhere ( never got out coyote hunting, either. ) Seems like we will have to watch where we go when it rains...both of us are getting too old to get out and push.

Got rained out also. Went out Thurs. evening to western ND/eastern MT for a long planned three day hunt. Got rain during the night and was very overcast this morning. Made for very slick roads and looked like more rain on the way so just packed up and headed home. Befor leaving I did make it part way to one town, parked the pickup and trailer at a high abandoned farm and took the fortrax the last couple of miles to the town. I did get to try out my new 22-250 Savage build. I saw a total of fourteen dogs, eight rounds went down the pipe and there are now six fewer dogs for next time. By the time I got back to the pickup it had started to sprinkle and there would have been no way I would have pulled that trailer out of there without four wheel drive. Lucky for me I am only four hours from the towns and not coming all the way from IL. Maybe next weekend. TB

Been there, done that. It's too bad the rain messed up your PD hunt.

On the brighter side, good shooting at the yotes' !! Sometimes I wonder if I don't go PD/gopher hunting just to get a shot at yote's. But whatever, it sure is nice to be able to have a back-up varmint to pursue when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Good shooting TOObuilder.

Rain is like acid to Pdogs, and ain't much fun on the hunters. Getting stuck sucks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....
