Promised to let you guys know where I would be fishing next week. Just found out that the fishing trip I have to take for work is at Andersons on Leech lake in Walker. We will be fishing Wednesday afternoon, with guides. Looks pretty good from the web page but I know less than nothing about it. Already been snookered into a $50 bet by one of the Yankees putting on the show so it is obvious, they will have no mercy on a Southern boy far from home. TM

Ray, you have made many tracks since we had breakfast in Dallas and I know you enjoyed most of them. I printed out the trip you described awhile back and gave it to my eye doc, (Dr Mack in Tyler, TX), he hunts all over the world and just came back from there. Good to see you got over the eye problem and goig strong again. As for catching fish, just keep your bait in the water. Best of luck. -- no

Guess I should have thought of listening to the guide! :-) Should have known you Yankees would not give up any secrets to a Bama boy. (grin)
No, good to hear from you. I often think of that short visit. Amazing how life leads us around but all in all, I have enjoyed life. Someone's tag line on here says it best. You only live once. If you do it right, it should be enough!
Come see us when you get a chance.

I would guess you will be fishing for walleye. Think light! No heavier than a 6 or 8 lb line. The best advise is to listen to your guide! If you dont have a rod & reel for walleye, see if the guide has one to use. If you catch fish with it, buy it from him. Most guides are equipped to do that. Walleye are mostly on the bottom & you fish slow for them. You may even catch a northern with that walleye rig. Very seldom can you get them in, for they bite the line! It will get your heart a pumping if you do! Ever put a leech on a hook? That could be one of baits you use. Walker is a small but busy town. Check out Reeds sporting good store. Lots of guns & sporting equipment. Im about 35 miles from the northeast corner of Leech Lake. You will be right in the heart of Minnesota lake country. It will be nice to have southern boy feed these mosquitoes. I lost 3 lbs in the last 2 weeks from all the blood they taken out of me! I had one on me that was so large it had a wood tick on it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Trust your guide, and be prepared to fish for walleyes and maybe muskie. Three classic presentations for Minnesota walleyes are to jig fish, slip bobber rigs, and Lindy rigs, which are long snelled hooks with a walking or slip sinker up past the snell, which is usually attached to a snap swivel. Any guide worh his pay will get you going with one of these rigs, or whatever he's using at the time.

Leech is a world-class muskie lake, and the largemouth bass fishing is probably the best in the state, especially east of Bear Island. The walleye have suffered the last few years. Tkhey are usually in the main basin early in the season, may be concentrated in Agency Bay by now. Lots of small pike. For anyone interested in camping/fishing there, the Chippewa National Forest campgound at Stoney Point is the nicest campgound on the lake. Be sure to stop in at Reed's Sports downtown Walker. They also have decent shotgun ranges.

For gods sake stay away from Northern Lights Casino! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> To many fisherman and hunters help with the tribes IRA(indian retirement account)! Mike

Great input guys. Definitely sounds like it will be fun. Right now it looks like just Wednesday afternoon and the weather is always chancy but what the heck. The company is paying for me to be there and the customer is paying for the guide! What do I have to lose???
Sapper, Know what you mean about the casinos. We stayed at Mystic Lake Casino when we came up to look over the territory. Stayed 5 days and they got $20 off me the last night. Guess you might say I am not their prime market! :-) Was real surprised to be in a Casino where you could not drink though. Cigarette smoke in clouds but no alcohol. Not a big drinker either so that was fine, just different. Ray

TM,
Leech Lake is located in wolf country, and is also one of the better bear hunting areas in the state. The deer hunting is good although the hunting pressure can be heavy. Plenty of grouse and waterfowl too. It's a good area, and well worth trying to make some contacts for hunting this fall.

TM1, They do serve at Northern Lights. The wifes place of employment has their anual christmas party there. From the servers walking around taking orders to the bar over on the northwest end(normally a band each weekend). Mike

MIke, As I said earlier, a casino could go broke fast trying to live off what I spend on booze and gambling. Of course if it is close, some of the customers might want to go and I have to tag along. Some of those folks are bottomless pits when it comes to drinking. TM

My grandfather homesteaded near Headquarters Bay in 1916. I have photos of him transporting a milk cow on a raft from Walker....It's a nice lake but things have changed since I hunted and fished from my cabin om Sugar Point in the 60s...Good luck on you fishing.
