I always thought that I knew why the distance for the Marathon was 26 miles 385 yards, but I just found out that I was wrong.

26.2 Miles since 1908. The distance was changed so the Royal family could view the finish line from their box.

Well, historically, it was the distance from a famous Greek battle (which they won) to the city of Marathon. A runner was dispatched to let the city know of the great victory. He ran it nonstop, gave his glorious news - and died on the spot. To run that distance - or to complete any task that proves overwhelming - has been called a "marathon" ever since.

That is what I thought as well. I just read that no one knows the route that the runner took. The two most likely roads are something like 21.5 and 25.5. When the Olympics were restarted, the distance varied, pretty much whatever the organizers decided upon. In the 1908 Olympics, the distance from Windsor Castle to the Royal box at the stadium was 26 miles, 385 yards, so it was run at that distance then, after that it varied again until it was established in 1921 that the accepted distance would be 26 miles, 385 yards. The first Olympics to be held following that decision was in 1924.

Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens with the happy and important news of victory over the Persians. Those who say this never happened fail to see value of a good story.
