Can anyone who has the BOSS on a Model 70 tell me what settings you're using for 180 grain bullets? Winchester's "sweet spot" chart doesn't include the 180s.

What cal? I have one in 30-06, 300win mag and 2 in 7STW, I do not have the chart on the STW, a pal of mine ran the R&D for the BOSS program, he fired over 25000 rounds, he said it was not uncommon to get 1/4 inch groups out of Winchester barrels, that is fantastic for a factory hammer forged barrel!!! I had one in 30-06 I bought ,first one to hit SW GA, Thomasville GA ,and airline capt pal was with me when I scoped it, bore sighted it and shot first 5 shot cloverleaf group, SOB worried me for 18 years till I sold him the gun, it has made 30+ one shot whitetail kills a few by his kids that were not born when the gun was bought! very best WinPoor

Sorry...30-06. I had it at the range for the first time yesterday and was worried about the velocities with the truncated barrel. I shouldn't have been, as I averaged 2,840 for the 168 BT and H4350 and 2,754 with the 180 Accubond and H4350. Fantastic accuracy with the 168s, but I'd like to have a better BOSS starting point for the 180s.

My chart is at farm office, I will look it up BUT that is just a starting point, you tune either way and watch group, shoot slow do not heat up. I only shot 165 Fed BT's and 168 gr FGMM, 2 was the cats azz! very best WinPoor PS Do you use break of solid tip? I use the break but it will blow ear drums!

Yeah, I'm familiar with the chart, and it allowed me to dial-in the 168s very quickly. Why they left out 180s is a mystery.

Wow. I have 2 cards from when I bought M70 w/ BOSS's 20 odd years ago. Neither has a 180gr '06 setting. Puzzling that they would omit what is arguably the most popular bullet weight for the most popular cartridge in America.

Richard, start at 5 work up a 1/4 turn 3 shot groups, let it cool well, on my home range I walk every shot with the bolt open, after your 200 yard walk the barrel will be ready for another shot. I am looking for the detailed info the guy that shot 25,30K rounds sent me.I will forward it to you. Very best WinPoor

This may help answer your BOSS questions, I spent an hour on the phone talking with this fine gent... WinPoor
Prior to retirement, I was the Chief Firearms test Engineer in the R&D Division of Browning Arms for many years. I performed virtually all developmental testing of the BOSS system (well over 30,000 rds.) All testing was at 100 yds. with commercial ammo. The project was assigned to Mr. Clyde Rose, head of Quality Control & Engineering, and a design engineer in his own right. The project's aim was to develop a new and inovative system to improve accuracy. It was original in concept and NOT the result of "cut off barrels" of customers.
The procedure that was developed was to fire the rifles as received with three diferent ammo specs of differing manufacturers when possible. Typically, the A-Bolt would group around 1 1/2" (3 shots) Many, many designs were tried before the one that was finally decided upon. Many, many different weights were tried also. Generally the groups averaged about 1/2" with the BOSS system installed, although it was not unusual for me to obtain a sub 1/4" group, and I remember one that was .0029, right, 29 thousands measured center to center. We were reluctant to publish this data to the public as most shooters would be disappointed if they didn't achieve similar results. As you know, the expertise of shooters coupled other than quality optics results in wildly differing grouping ability. It must be noted that shooting was done with high quality optics in a 100 yd. tunnel.
Sorry to be so windy, but it is difficult to explain the process that tooks years and thousands of rounds to fully develop, in a few words.
I will agree it takes some experimentation, but the results are well worth the effort in my opinion. And, it's a lot of fun too!
Hope this helps. Rob

This will be more help fine tuning!
Prior to my retirement, I was the Chief Firearms test Engineer at Browning Arms R&D Division for many years.
I performed all the developmental testing for the BOSS system (well over 30,000 rounds fired)
To find your sweet spot, I'd suggest the following procedure.
With the system set at mid point, fire a carefully aimed 3 shot group. Adjust the weight 1/4 turn in either direction and fire another group of 3 shots. Compare the results. If the group is smaller, (if the group opens up, go in the other direction) continue in 1/4 turn increments until you reach optimum. The groups will open up again if you adjust past the optimum. It's important let the rifle cool between groups.
That's the procedure I followed in determining starting points for the system. All testing was with commercial ammo, in a 100 yard tunnel with VERY good optics. After a short time, no one got very excited at any groups that were not sub 1/4". I recall one group that was .0029, right, 29 thousandths of an inch, but it must be remembered this was done under optimal conditions with high quality optics.
Hope this is of some use to you. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.
Best regards, Rob Very best WinPoor
