If you had the following in your safe: AR - 223/5.56 Rem 600 243 Sav. 99 243 Rem 700 25-06 Rem 700 25-06 Wby 7mm-08 Rem 700 30-06 Blaser 300 Win Mag waiting for the barreled action to come back - 358 Win
What caliber would you build next? Personally, I'm not into the really large stuff (375 on up) or some of the mags. Just looking for ideas and thoughts of others.

without knowing what you hunt I would consider a 22-250 or 220 swift and a 17 or 22 hornet

204 Ruger or 20 Practical
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Nothing. I'd take one of those on a hunt for someplace I've never hunted for something I've never hunted...
That said, if I just have to build something around that lineup, it'd be a 264 Win Mag to weigh about 8#.

A bolt action 223 Rem or AI.
I used to say my AR was enough but since I so bled together a Salvage bolt in that cartridge I'm realizing how much I was missing.
You already have dies & bullets... And w/ the Ruger American a 1-in-8" twist the "build" will entail little more than a Boyd's stock!

shooter, I've been tossing around the idea of a 22-250. I mostly hunt whitetails and axis on a friends ranch. Add in the occasional Mulie and varmint and elk. Biggest problem I have is that the months of Sept and Oct are my busiest months so getting some free time then is nearly non-existent. 204 and/or the hornet could be interesting as well!

A .223 Bolt gun with 8" twist.

What caliber would you build next? Personally, I'm not into the really large stuff (375 on up) or some of the mags. Just looking for ideas and thoughts of others. I'd simply procure a Montana 223 and cut to the [bleep] chase. You'll shoot it more than everything else bolted together and despite rumors to the contrary...trigger time is the function that bears the most fruit. First pitch would be a 75A-Max stabilization test and then I'd slide the 'box shim,so as to allow same to kiss and repeat. Newest one I gunned was a coupla days ago,3rd hand(punched 223AI already) and it shot the schit outta said boolit,as well as shorter offerings. 1/2MOA at a pedestrian 3040fps in formed cases, with only a trigger tweak. Tough not to swoon a sub 6lb rifle that'll chew up the 1000yd+ line, with "free" brass, miserly powder consumption, modest recoil, static POA/POI,a great trigger, weather beating componetry, superb balance/handling,8-40 base fasteners,(5) pokes in the belly and the warmest of fuzzies. Hint. That is how you build confidence. Re-hint. (Addendum: For More Succinctitude) It is a hilarious [bleep] notion, that acquisition of a new or used rifle, was gonna somehow curtail my time spent Outdoors. Cain't fathom the notion, that a great rifle was going to do ANYTHING other than bolster the production and enjoyment,of the very pursuits inherent in it's abilities and nearest/dearest to my heart. Funnier than [bleep] to me,the incredible number of folks who cain't know how to connect dots and go wayyyyyyyyy outta their road,to make simplistic schit difficult. To the chagrin of Couch Potatoes everywhere, spent primers remain The Supreme Tutorial...no matter how [bleep] badly they WISH Pretend to be "real". Good Riggin' has never hurt results and curiously enough....never [bleep] will. Hint. 'Course it's easy for me to say,I'm afforded the luxury of not being forced to guess. Re-hint.

Bbear,
Since you have two, take one of those 25-06's and turn it into a 6-06. It's about the simplest, most bang for the buck upgrade you can do with a 25-06. That's what I did with mine. Couldn't be happier.
Throat it and then 8 twist it for the long, heavies. Use your existing brass and squeeze it down to .243...no neck turning, trimming, etc. It will feed flawlessly from your existing mag box. Load it with a 105 VLD or similar and go kill stuff a long way off. Run the numbers on 105 VLD at 3300. You may be surprised....it will put lots of bigger cartridges to shame.
