Monte Walsh (1970) with Lee Marvin and Jack Palance, Mitch Ryan and Jeanne Moreau, not the stupid made for TV remake with Tom Selleck, is my favorite western.

Nobody gets to be a cowboy forever

Nothing wrong with Selleck, especially in westerns, but Monte Walsh by Jack Schaefer is a great novel and they could have used other parts of it. Not copy the original movie almost line for line.

Unforgiven 1960 makes my top ten list, but Unforgiven 1992 just misses the cut. Way too slow in the middle.

Hombre is another one that I neglected to include on my list.

What a great, terrific western. One of the best ever.

Valdez is Coming
Hombre ( I live about 15 miles from the site of the movie, when I first moved here 35 years ago the mine they were in was still there. The pass is a very unsafe 4 wheel drive area now)

My mistake - the movie is "Valdez is Coming"

I don't consider The Outlaw Josey Wales a western. It's a Civil War film.

I think everyone has pretty much summed up the best of the best. "Once Upon a Time in the West" has always been an all time favorite of mine. Jason Robards, Henry Fonda and Claudia Cardinale, not to mention "Bronson", all did a superb job of acting.
