I've gotten the itch to get a higher end 22lr. I currently have a cz453 American and it shoots amazingly well. There are some aspects of the cz that really irk me, namely the high azz bolt throw. The Cooper classic looks like exactly what I want but doubt I could justify the cost. How about the anshutz 1416? I have zero experience with them but they seem to be highly regarded and reasonably priced. What say you? How does the 1416 fair with bulk plinking ammo?

for the money I would not get the 14, if you go anschutz, i would go with a 17 series gun. Have had both and there is a difference. If you like the looks of the cooper, look at the kimbers. the triggers are really really nice, all the ones I have had shot well and are nice to hunt with.

I actually do prefer the styling of the kimber over the anshutz. Perhaps I need to look into the kimbers more. Any negatives on the kimbers? I know people have their preferences between Oregon and Yonkers made units.

the yonkers/oregon debate goes on and on. I have only had yonkers guns and wish I had never sold any of them. Only negative is some of them have weak ejection when working the bolt slowly. Minor annoyance given the ergos and accuracy of the guns. the triggers really are excellent too.

I have both a 1416 and a Cooper 57M.
IF i had to choose between 2 1416's or one Cooper, i would still own a Cooper.
That said, I don't shoot bulk ammo but this is about the average for my 1416 w a Zeiss Conquest 3x9 at 50 yards fired rapid, off a front bag.

My 1416 shoots like crap with HV plinking ammo. I'm talking 1-1.5" at 50 yards. With mid grade target ammo this is what it will do at 50 yards. 5 shots with Wolf MT holding at the corner of the 7.

That's with all the stars and planets aligned. I've shot a few groups as good or possibly better but they are not all that good every time.

Still the difference between HV junk ammo and fairly good target ammo is quite distinct.

My new Chese-schutz (54-action repeater) does well with 40gr bullets. Here's 5-shots at 50 yards with CCI Minis:

I hear you, when you get used to shooting quality sub sonic stuff, between the extra noise and bigger groups, hard to be happy with the HV stuff.

The rifle liked cheap Thunderbolts, and even 36gr Golden Showers. Need some more time to give it a thorough shakedown.

Search the NRA's site for matches near you. Go there and see what they are using!

Here in the New England area we shoot all year around with .22's.

In the winter the matches are indoors and irons and scopes are used.

Here they are shooting 22's at 50 & 100 yds!

I have a Kimber Hunter and an SVT both are Yonkers guns.
I like both of them and wish they would start production back to full swing.
The SVT I bought used a few months ago and the original owner swore it loved Wolf Match target ammo but it really likes Eley Tenex I found out.

I usually shoot 5 shots but this one scared me, it's normally closer to 3/4" at 100 yards with Wolf.

If you can find a Kimber, get it!
