Jack,

I like the big-bores and have carried a few. But I got tired of their weight and bulk after a few miles. My favorite the past few years has been a simple 5-shot revolver in 357... I like the SP101. It can be carried in different ways... holster or hip pouch on my pack belt... and when I need to conceal it I can just slip it in my waistband with the clip keeping it secure when I go into town or back to the motel. Was carrying it in my motorcycle jacket pocket too. I dig the flipper for front locking compared to a S&W. I fell down a lot on my moto in the dirt grin

Have also carried a bunch of autos: G17, G26, G36, PM9, S&W, 22's, and more I can't remember. What I found is that ~25 ounces is the limit for me. A 40+ ounce large frame is more bulk and weight than I want climbing canyons and mountains.

No pics of the SP101, but here's some big-bores that I carried about a bunch but set aside:

325PD
445 Ti
625 JM
SBH
36 (oops, not a big-bore!)
629-6
Bisley 45 Colt

Jason, what barrel length did you go with in your SP101?

The same reason a person carries any handgun vs. a long gun, convenience.

Eric,

I have the 2.25", although I did own the 3" with CT grips for awhile. I didn't care for the CT grips and the 3" with stock grip seemed nose heavy compared to the 2.25" which I didn't care for. I don't think you can go wrong with the 2.25", 3", or 4.2" though. And there are a bunch of some aftermarket grips.

The SP101 is also the handgun my wife carries if we're in the woods. Its easy for her to carry, load/unload, etc.

If you get one, I'd recommend knocking down the sharp exterior edges and cleaning up the parts inside. There are some burrs and rough edges that are easy to fix and make the action noticeably smoother.

Finally took some pics to show the clip, and the front locking flipper. The flipper is on the crane and mates with a slot in the frame. I believe the GP100 and SRH are the same (along with the grip stud). The front lock is closer to the cylinder compared to the Smith design, and the ejector rod's only function is to eject.

Jason

I'd still like to try a LCR in 357. IIRC, the few that I handled had an odd trigger rest.

A 357 carbine is on the list, especially for the kids to plink with. The stainless 77/357 might be the one. Integrally suppressed is tempting, but most seem too chunky.

Jay, I'll make you a prediction. That photograph will one day be a family treasure.

During deer season either my 45colt or 44mag(both smith mtn guns)

In off season usually my ruger 22/45 or 1911, sometimes. If in bear country though the 44mag always!

I have used a bunch but settled on a few that work well for me. In the woods 90% of the time it is a G20sf. It has enough power to deal with anything I need, is reasonable light and flat, and takes weather and abuse well. I will sometimes carry a 329pd if weight or power are at a premium, but I like carrying the G20 better.

Jason,

Thank you. That looks like a real handy size. I may have to give one a go! Are those the stock grips that you're using?

Cheers,

Eric

When walking in woods where there's no grizzlies about, my favorite "trail gun" is my S&W Model 60-4 with Herretts "Shooting Ace" stocks (the stocks of choice for all of my J-frame revolvers). This Model 60, chambered in .38 Special, has adjustable sights and a 3", full-length lugged barrel.

Depends on which neck of the wood I am in, but for most short hiking trips and pre-season scouting trips my 4" Dan Wesson 22lr goes in a simple hip holster.

Hard to beat a 1911A1. Second best would be a 4" .357 Mag

If I was going to be walking in the woods at night where there's "Lions and Tigers and Bears" I'd want my Beretta P4 Storm .45 with the light/laser.

Usually it is a S&W329. But I also carry a Kimber Stainless Pro-Carry (series I) a lot. They both weigh the same, but I am very fond of a 1911 over an N-Frame revolver when it comes to shooting. But the 329 packs a lot of punch in those few ounces.
