Hi guys,

Just wondering if anybody has hunted here, I should have 5 more years until I get enough points to draw a muzzleloader tag, I only use a flintlock, so OTC rifle I'll be the dummy in period attire and a .62 flintlock I built. Figured it would take me 4-5 years to learn something so my muzzy tag wouldn't be a waste. I live in Pennsylvania so scouting will have to be me getting out there 3-4 days ahead of time.

Thanks!

I have hunted there and pretty much all around that particular GMU 25.

Mostly I hunted from about 1976 thru about 2005 or so. Early on it was great. I had a run where I killed 8 bulls in 8 years in one small area. However, after having been written up in several outdoor magazine it was over run with DYI'ers and then outfitters and still was when I quit hunting it. I don't have a thing against outfitters, but for some reason the forest service issued a whole lot more permits in that unit than they should of in my opinion, or there were some unlicensed ones working it.

Then for about 5 years, the DOW issued 2000 OTC rifle cow tags there to reduce the herd. Then cut it to 500,then stopped. It sure reduced the numbers and finding any elk came hard. Elk that were left, drifted onto private land when the 1st shot was fired and many drifted over west to the White River drainage.

I stopped hunting there and moved elsewhere which has been very successful for me. You can still kill elk there, but if you don't know the area, a few days scouting before the season opens won't help much.

If I had preference points, I'd sure not waste them in GMU25 which has always been an OTC bull elk tag unit.

Thanks for the info, I am not a trophy hunter, just looking for meat and be cdow compliant. I guess I'll learn as I go. I'm assuming best thing to do is have a local lined up to pack me in and out and an elk if I'm lucky enough. Thanks
