I received my new 338Edge+P a few months ago. I never fired the rifle. I can't get powder. When is this dry spell going to end?

From the name of the cartridge it probably needs something slow:

Or 7828. I've seen all of those for sale in the last month. Look harder.

A five second internet search shows companies with 7828, US 869 and H50BMG in stock. Maybe not the H1000 many seem to like, but those will get you shooting.

There is always a difference between cant find it, and don't want to pay those prices.
But building an edge ain't cheap.
I'd think, like noted above, 200 bucks or so and some internet time will get you rolling.

The thing is, moderately priced powder is available on the Net. Will have to pay a Haz Mat fee, but its pretty easy to blow similar funds on gas and time spent driving around looking at stores.
Also agreed that anybody willing to blow through 100+ grains of powder and 80 cent a piece bullets every shot must not be too worried about the economics of the situation!

We've seen this before, in particular with one Campfire member who went on a monthly road trip over half of Montana looking for .22 rimfire ammo in the same stores. He'd almost always report there was none, though once in a while he'd find a little and report he bought it all, or as much the store would allow. (Gee, wonder why there usually wasn't any?) Then he'd log on here and rant about the rimfire ammo conspiracy. Apparently people who are perfectly capable of using the Internet for rants have no clue about using it to shop for ammo or components.
For quite a while MidwayUSA has had Hodgdon 50BMG available in one-pound canisters for $25. (8-pound jugs haven't been intermittently available.) The limit per customer is only 48 1-pounders, but that might get somebody with a big .338 by for a while.

If you purchased it from Shawn C he uses H1000 and gives you the recipe that he uses for his guns. I have shot his Edge and his +P's and they have a lot of authority. Have fun with your new gun. I would think it would be plenty of gun for the NY deer.

I did buy the rifle from Shawn. He recommended VVN570. He believes its the best powder for the +P cartridge. N.Y. deer are tough you need at least a 50 cal. to bag one. Otherwise the bullets just bounce off there chest. LOL

My apologies, I am not current on my information. It used to be H1000. I have shot a fairly large brown bear with a 338 Edge and it was very good brown bear medicine, it should handle any deer you encounter.

There are a pile of other available powders out there that will work just fine. Just depends on how important shooting the rifle is to you.

Viht powders get imported only so much a year IIRC. I suspect you may find it hard to get it on short notice.
Its why we used to buy 100 pounds a year ahead of time, so we had next years powder on hand for 223.
I have not googled for it yet.
I do know that we've placed large orders for other powders and they are starting to show up a bit at a time.
Don't sweat it though, I"ve had brand new rebarreled guns sit in my safe for years before I got around to shooting em. It won't go bad. LOL.
