Can anyone share their experience on game with accubond bullets? I'm looking at Winchester Accubond CT in 7mm, has bc .51 and they pledge controlled expansion good penetration etc. Nosler has similar characterisitcs. Was considering XP3 on elk too but the expansion could be too rapid and lose penetration and I'm wondering how these different bullets will perform at close and long range...will they expand well at close range..will they penetrate well at long range.

I killed a bull at 521 yards with the 140 gr. Accubomb.. broke both shoulders..

That was after reading on here to not use them on elk.

I've been using Accubonds for three years and have two kills with two shots. One was a lung shot that went through and through. I use a 300 win mag. They do gel the meat a little but I have found them more accurate in my rifle than partitions. Both would be excellent choices. IMO

I've used the Nosler AB's pretty much exclusively since a year after they came out on elk, deer, and black bear. Shots have been from 20 yards out to around 300. Yes, they can do it at close range and far.

I have killed 4 elk including 2 big bulls with accubonds all 1 shot kills..

Killed a very nice 6x6 with a 200 grain in my 300 RUM @ 167 yards. DRT. Busted ribs and one shoulder, lodging under the skin on the far side. 100.5 grains recovered weight afterwards. I considered it good results considering all the bone it went through. My preferred bullet still remains my 180 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws in that gun, but would not gripe if I had to use the AB's again.

Grizzly and black bear with the 225 gr AB out of a 338-06. Impala, blesbuck, black wildebeest, warthog and kudu with the 160 gr AB out of a 7x57. A Scimitar oryx with the 140 gr AB out of a 7x57. Most bang, flops though the grizz managed a half dozen 360's.

Three elk kills with AccuBonds, no recovered bullets asd they all passed through.

.30-06, 150g AB, ~265 yards, on the ground before I recovered from the recoil.

Two with .338WM and 225g AB. Not instant drops but all exited. First was ~ 262 yards and got 3 shots. (First shot was too high, above spine, my fault, next was well-placed but elk didn't drop so it got another. Last two shots made one elongated hole in the rib cage. First of those stopped elk and would have been sufficient but my philosophy is shoot until the drop and stay down.)

Second elk with .338WM was 487 yards. Walked 58 yards and dropped. Bullet was well placed on broadside and exited.

This year I plan to use .30-06 and 180g ABs. If I am fortunate to get a shot (and do my part in placing it), I have no doubts about the outcome.

That surprises me(the exit that is)...would not have expected it.But there it is!

5 elk in last 8 yrs with 300 wm and 180 gr accubonds. Smallest a calf, biggest a large 6 point, 75 to @200 yds, all 1 shot kills. Interesting, most were quartering away, inthrough2nd or 3rd rib, and into offside shoulder, which was broken, bullet lodged under skin. Also watched buddy shoot a nice 5x6 with a 110 ab @200 yds, dropped at the shot, although he put 2 more in.

Got back up or just insurance?

I once shot a buck a second time with my .45-70 after it was down. Didn't want it getting up as it was close to the property boundary. (Turns out the second shot wasn't needed as the first one was massively destructive inside the chest.)

Just insurance. He had been worried that the 257 was a bit small- I was yellin at him to stop, as I was trying to get the smaller 5x5 that was with his bull to stop long enough for me to shoot...turned out OK a i got a nice 6x6 2 days later...

In the Column of Hunting Rifles there is a thread started by kman. It is titled: 30 cal bullets and cow femurs or something like that. It tested a 200 grain accubond not sure about the 180. Very good info IMO.

I was surprised as well - so much so that it didn�t occur to me. The elk scattered at the shot and I thought I might have either missed or wounded the one I was aiming for. What few seconds I had were spent trying to decide whether to take a second shot at what I thought was the same elk (was it limping or just rough ground?) or pass and pray my elk was already down. Caution won out but as I approached the area where the cow should be disappointment started to set in. The cow was not to be seen and I was concerned I was going to have to trail one in the failing light. I stopped to get my bearings and looked to the left and a bit behind me and there, thankfully, was the cow, down behind some brush about 5-10 yards away. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly and easily they can disappear once they are down.
