Great rifle. Tough and accurate. Keeps on keeping on.

A classic. I see prices climbing.

Love mine! Best cheapo .22 ever built. Get the tube fed model, though. The clip fed models are not near as reliable. Bought my first one when I was a sophmore in High School in 1976 for $59 bucks brand new. It was the Apache Black Model. Chrome with the black stock.

The one I had was a total POS. The barrel slips into the receiver and is held in place only by a shim in a slot in the plastic stock. If the shim gets even the slightest bit loose, the barrel will wiggle in the receiver. Since the rear sight is on the receiver, not the barrel, you won't ever hit anything twice in a row. At 50 yds, I could keep most of them in a 6" circle. Sometimes.

They don't hold a scope well but otherwise they are a great rifle. I was shooting one last weekend. We have one stashed in our hunting camp. Not taking one apart is excellent advise!

I thought I was the only one with those issues.

Tip-off mounts are on that receiver too. Makes the scope useless as you described as well. Gunshow fodder. wink

The parts for these go for big money on ebay lately. I saw a chrome 66 for $179 about a month ago, it was gone in a day or two.

Oh yeah, forgot about the scopes. The top of the receiver is thin stamped steel with scope mounting grooves. If you screw down the scope mounts tight enough to stay in place, you'll squeeze the top of the receiver so that the bolt will jam.

My suggestion is to get a real 22 and forget that toy.

Nice light autoloader. WOrks well for kids who don't have the arm strength to hold up a heavier rifle. They don't do well with optics though.

Like others have said. No takee apartee.

Ran across one in a shop last year that I thought had a fair price, so I took it home. It goes bang with great reliability and is a near perfect plinker. I have more accurate (scoped) 22's, but none that are more fun.
As I often shoot with my grandsons, I like the rear feeding tube. It seems just a bit safer design than the Rem 552, another great rimfire.

Why are prices so high on the them?

They are solid little rifles. I remember dreaming over them when I was a kid at the gun counter.

How hard is it to tighten up a screw? Mine has been the toughest, most reliable rifle that I have ever seen. Iron sights only. miles

Agree that the 66 isn't the best gun to scope. The "receiver" is just a sheet metal shroud that fits over the plastic stock. No direct connection to the barrel. Not the best arrangement.

I took one apart. Had to borrow one from a good bud to get mine back together. My gunsmith was most impressed that I was able to put a 66 back together.

Later, I got one in pieces, most in a paper bag that no one was able to reassemble. By that time, I was an expert and put it together.

Most time one can visualize gun parts and how they fit together. Not so with the Nylon 66! If one isn't fairly experienced with such stuff, don't go there!

I've had two. They're alright if all you want to do is make noise, or beat a coon to death with it. They are reliable and tough. That's the best I can say about them. Don't bother scoping one.
