I am looking at changing the barrel on my vanguard. It is currently wearing a 300 wby mag barrel but I just don't see the point in beating myself half to death at the range anymore. I am looking at a 30-06 barrel but will I have to change the bolt face or the entire bolt in order to do this? If I do where can I find one?

Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

You could find a Vanguard in 30-06 for less than the cost of changing yours to 30-06.

You'd need a different bolt face.

Not worth it.

Trade the 300 Wtby. for a .30-06.

Or,
Sell the .300 Wby,
Buy yourself any one of a large number of choices in .30-06.

Agree with sell or trade advice.

The mag bolt face won't work with '06 or similar and you're going to spend a lot more than you need to with your original plan.

If you handload, you can always load down to .30-06 velocities.

Keep the Wby., get another Vanguard in '06. They're not that expensive...

You may even find a good used one.

I have a near-new 7mm Rem Mag barrel I'd sell you cheap. That'd be a straight switch and give you a cartridge similar to the 06.

Short of that I'd sell it & buy a 30-06 of your choice.

Thanks guys. I want to keep the rifle for sentimental value as my wife gave it to me our first Christmas married. I was going to get the barrel off ebay for about $65, but I didn't realize that Weatherby will not sell a new bolt outside of sending them your rifle to have the work done. Now I just hope the ebay seller will cancel my late night half asleep irrational bid on the barrel.

I was originally looking at a 7mm mag, PM me with the details and price, please.

Maybe someone will out bid you. Worse case, just get it and re-list it. That will cost some freight and handling, but won't be a total loss.

One could get a Shilen or similar fitted for around $500.

If I was RugerM, I'd get efw's 7RM barrel and call it a day. That's probably his best bet to have the performance he wants for the least cost.

Swapping those barrels shouldn't be that expensive.

The ebay seller was more than gracious and cancelled my bid, he was a tinkerer as well and understood completely.

I am taking efw up on his offer and getting the 7mm barrel. The 7mm was what I wanted to begin with but just has one of those late night ebay discoveries that I regretted the next morning.

Weatherby will only sell you a new bolt if they get to install the new barrel and the bolt alone cost $250 to $350 plus the smiting.

Thanks guys for all the help.

Wouldn't be the first time. Probably won't be the last either.
