The biggest thing at a soccer game is someone getting a hand caught in someone's dreadlocks. When something goes wrong at NASCAR big chunks of cars go flying in all directions at over 200 miles/hour and when the race is over, everybody goes back to the trailer court, drinks a few beers and beats his wife.
When the soccer game is over a riot breaks out and the losing fans are no worse contributors than the winning fans, they run over everyone in the bleachers and kill a few people...
Now that you mention it, soccer does sound pretty good...

Soccer brings out the worst in people, which, if you're drunk, I suppose is a good thing.
Here are a few. Please note: no pads, and no penalties thrown on any of these hits. Also, please notice that the play never stopped, so hit or get hit and get back into it immediately.
Sorry. But I'm not seeing anything in that video that leads me to believe rugby is anywhere near as explosive as the NFL.
There's a reason the NFL require the equipment they do. And it ain't because the guys on that field are fragile.
Travis
The equipment in the NFL is there only to allow for the use of the helmet and shoulder pads as weapons; nothing more.
Players play both offense and defense; no specialists at only one side of the ball or even at one position. A winger must be able to tackle a prop or a flanker and a prop must be able to run with or get angle on a fullback or outside wing.
Take another look. Of course, most of the hits in the NFL clips are quite old and are almost all penalties in the NFL now. Not so the recent footage and legal hits in the rugby matches.
Then again, having played both games (though certainly not at the professional levels for either) perhaps I have a bit more than a clue.

Ever played soccer or rugby? I'd guess probably not.

my best guesstimate is American football will have to start to either eliminate equipment or make it so blocky and boxy that it will severely impede the players.

I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

I'd venture to bet that almost none of those running their mouth here have.
Well, I have. I played all three of those in question (soccer, rugby, and American football), as well as baseball. Baseball was my worst, because I wasn't good at the hardest thing in sports: consistently hitting a baseball with a bat. I played soccer all the way through school until college, football in high school, and rugby in soccer and graduate school.
Without a doubt, rugby was the hardest and most physically demanding. Tackles have to be textbook or they don't work or you get hurt. You can't "blow some one up", because if you do then you separate your own shoulder or break your own bones.
Soccer requires almost as much stamina as rugby. You run, a lot, and that running is in bursts as well as sustained. Yes, there are stoppages in your running, but you are constantly moving.
Football resulted in more injuries but that was simply because of the discrepancy in size of the positions more than anything else. 300 pounders don't play rugby or soccer because they couldn't keep up the pace and aren't flexible enough in positions on the field. I am NOT saying that they aren't superb athletes (they damned sure are), but the sport isn't as physically demanding as rugby for sure. Offense/defense, time outs, substitutions in and out, all of those exist in football but not in the others. Stoppages of play between every play and reassembly of the sides back into "proper" alignment; those don't exist.
Soccer may never catch on in the US, and that's fine. However, I think if Americans paid any attention at all to rugby, not only would they get it but they'd love it.

Yup - won't be long before the NFL adds another "F" to that moniker and it'll be the 'National Flag Football League"...
Geez...

No argument there.. Rugby has to be about the roughest 'ball' sport there is..

So are the NBA players.. But marathoners do NOT stop until they break the tape at 26 miles.. THERE'S some stamina..

If it does, it's time for me to shoot the TV..

Not sure it's televised much around here.. Only see it 1-2 times/year, maybe..

People watch NASCAR? I thought "watching" NASCAR was like "watching" golf or tennis; i.e., just code for taking a decent nap.

Why can't kickball fans just enjoy watching their game, and quit trying to convince me that I should enjoy watching their game. Anything that requires this hard of a sales push, I ain't buying.

Tennis has grunting women!
True. I have heard that people "watch" men's tennis, though.

For the same reason that some have to malign a sport they don't watch, haven't played, or know anything about.

Well said. I had the opportunity to watch a professional rugby match a couple years ago in South America. Amazing athletes and a great spectator sport. Incredible hits and tackles.
The comment on the necessity of proper form in rugby made by 4ager makes good sense as does his comment on other nuances in the comparison of the sports.
As to soccer, I don't enjoy watching it on tv, but to see a soccer match in South America is a real experience. Something I would do every chance I got whereas I haven't bothered to watch a single minute of the world cup.
