My neighbors at camp got this picture in early May of a nice black bear walking toward the treeline where my property begins. Any guesses as to his size? Here's another look at him. Notice the deer not far from him, showing no concern: This picture from my game camera from last fall looks like the same bear to me, although he would be heavier in the fall than in the spring: My daughter and I both got drawn for bear licenses next fall...hope he hangs around until then.

He'll put on some weight by fall, so he'll be a beautiful bear. Not thinking he's big, but sure is a pretty one. Good luck on the hunt!

The bigguns have small heads in comparison to their body. That one doesn't have a small head, even last fall, but he is good looking.

If he is big for your area he is big. As said, nice fur on him. Also, if bears are not a common everyday critter in your area, then this one is a prize.
He is not a big bear by coastal BC standards: too much neck, too much ears, legs too long looking. He looks young. Even here, however, most bear hunters are just looking for a bear rather than an exceptionally big one. Sounds like this one is a good representative bear for your area.

IIRC the average bear killed in Upper MI is something like 200lbs. The biggest one I have personally seen killed was 400lbs and that is huge by UP standards.

This morning we had two lambs killed by a cougar less than 100 yards from our house. Our neighbors grand sons were raising them for the fair. Looks like a gun goes out side with walking the small dog at night.
