Came back from a week away to find this growing under the trim near my front door. I wiped up some of this last year (it was about 5" to the left last year) and a couple months ago wiped up some that was on the outside of the house also. The hair-like things are about 2 inches long. When I wiped it up - it was powdery. I used some bleach to hopefully kill it if it is a mold. Any ideas from you guys?

Never seen a door with nose hairs before.

It's hard to tell from pics, but I think I see some darkening where the floor meets the wall from the door to the corner. Moisture maybe? Check everything from the roof on down for leaks. Water can move a long ways once it's inside. Clogged rain gutters cause a lot of problems. Gutters attached with spikes can cause problems if the water gets up to the spike holes.

Checked my 2 fungus books, can't find anything resembling that.

First guess would be some type of coral fungus.

I did find this, which looks similar.

Not much help though cause it's unidentified...

Bleach will definitely kill mold and mildew...

The thing to do is to open up your wall and look for moisture. It has to be there in order to cause this mold to grow.

Once you find it you need to figure out where it's coming from and fix it at the source. Then throw away the old damp materials, dry things out with a hair dryer/heater and rebuild.

Have seen lots of molds/fungi, but never any like that. Why not start by pulling that piece of trim off the wall and examining what's inside. Am having a hunch that rain/moisture is getting in at the top of the door frame - or higher - and that you may have a sizeable mess about 7+ ft. tall.

if you read up on mold, bleach doesn't do it.

Its gotta be anti fungul or some such.

I have not read on it in years, but when I did, the bleach was a temporary thing solution wise by far.

Maybe anti bacterial....

The sooner you fix whatever is wrong the better. Mold can be bad for your health.

I had a leak for years that I didn't know about and it caused a bit of damage and ruined more than one weekend earlier this year.

My first instinct is to kill it. That's creepy! I was able to almost taste the mold that was in a downstairs basement apartment that I rented years ago. I pulled up some floor covering the landlord had placed over on the edge of the shower stall and found a TON of mold growing! I hate to think of how many mold spores I was breathing into my lungs during a shower. I hope you get it all out of your home soon.

I've seen horror films that started out just like that.

Seriously, take it to the closest college biology department. If they don't know, move the [bleep] out

That's what I was thinking. Get it analyzed somehow. Find what it is first.

Another thought.

Take it to a lab in the next town over. In more than one movie, when they analyzed it, it just got bigger and pissed off

Didn't take much Google research to find it. Bet you have cats or dogs don't you? If so, this species of fungus/mold is somewhat common in/around their feces. This guy at Mizzou might still be doing research on it in fact.

thanks, but we don't have any animals in the house. The previous owners did have a dog, though. And, we have been in the house for 7 years!
So, it does look like the picture on the garden forum, but there should be no dog poop in our wall anymore smile.

Maybe you have a dead rat or sewage leak.

While you have the trim off, spray hydrogen peroxide on and around it. I've cleaned up mold/mildew many times this way.
