Does anyone out there know the old-time formula for oil-based patterning board paint? In fifty years of reading gun books, I know I've seen it. I believe it was oil-based paint, mixed with some sort of oil (linseed? canola?) and perhaps even had some lime in it. Our club now has a 4' by 4' steel patterning board and I want to put it to use. Please don't suggest substituting latex or spray paint (that's all I got from the SASS wire.) Thanks, Hatch Green

We actually use white grease. Just roller it between shots; doesn't dry out, lasts nearly forever. HTH, Dutch.

Dutch, the range is located in Albuquerque, where dust storms are a fact of life every month. Does the grease dry out enough between usages that someone could paint over it (assuming they don't use grease) Thanks, Hatch

We also use white grease and a roller...sand and all.

You'll just have to accept it when I tell you that you ain't got nothing on Eastern Idaho when it comes to wind and dust......
It dries a little, but then someone just brings another tube of grease, and we happily continue doing what we are doing. It seems to get pretty dry, but then we get some fresh grease, and off we go. I'd not count on being able to paint over it (unless it was spray paint?). HTH, Dutch.
