I have a US Govt' 40x that I'd like to upgrade and get better accuracy from. My guess would mean a new barrel. I could sell it and be half-way to a Cooper LVT, I'm curious if I can get there with my 40x and a new barrel for less outlay of cash? Thanks.
edited to add .... this rifle will be for 50, 100 & 200 yard local shoots ... F T/R type shoots. I'd like to be an informal bench rifle if needed for those type of shoots too when they crop up.
Any and all input welcomed.
best

Am interested in this too. Need a bolt gun re-barreled.

Richard Gorham in Okla. is probably the best rimfire gunsmith in my estimation. You can check with the RF competitors also about this.

He may not be a very good telephone person either. I called the other morning and haven't heard back. He may be on vacation or indisposed so I'll call back this week.

He's done some excellent 581 triggers for me and built a custom 581 .17HM2 for me. He's highly regarded amongst the rimfire crowd.

Found some names and phone numbers of some rimfire smiths from a rimfire thread on Accurateshooter.com. Not sure if they are still in business but thought I'd post them for all to see.
Butch Hongisto, Sullivan, MO. 573.468.3234
Roger Brock, Arkansas? 660.491.2415
Gene Davis, Ohio? 740.468.2232
Richard Gorham, Oklahoma 918.231.7716

I can attest to the quality of Gordon Eck's work, he has built me a benchrest sporter and 10.5 lb class benchrest rifle that I've had success with at State/Regional/National competitions. His phone # is (845) 985-0001. Gene Davis is known for his prowess with a 40X and Gorham is an excellent smith as well. But - - Gordon is as good as they get. They all have built winners on the National level of rimfire benchrest. Here's a link to Gordon's Website. http://eckrimfire.com/about/what-we-do.html

Here is a picture of the 10.5 lb. rifle that Gordon built for me over the winter which I used to win a target and come in 4th overall in the recent IR50/50 Unlimited Nationals at 50 meters. Calfee converted an XP-100 action to rimfire and built a rifle out of it for a friend of mine, who went on to win the Nationals with it awhile back. It wasn't cheap, but it sure shot good with that Lilja barrel.
You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.

I'm having a rough time getting anyone to answer their phones. Maybe they are all on vacation? I have placed multiple calls to 2 different gunsmiths and either the messages I have left are not being returned or they won't answer the phone. I'm about to get a complex...;)
