A small amount of propane gas unregulated in the hole will put them to sleep.
Light it if you want to,i just gas them.

Why home recipe? Go to your local farm supply store and get some poisoned bait. I use "Go-Die Gopher" brand, a strychnine bait.

I found that a Speer 100 grain 25 Cal out of a 25=06 is about the purest poison I know of.

When my buddy Mick was a teen, an old Indian showed him how to drill a hole in the back of a terrapin's shell, run a wire a few inches back to a gasolined rag, light the rag, and send the terrapin down the groundhog's burrow.

When the groundhog ran out its other "door," he shot it.

Got cartridges, got guns, haven't got time to sit and watch for them; besides to much good stuff around the perimeter walls (they are inside the barn) for a shooting solution The "Go-Die Gopher" sounds like the answer. Thanks Guys.

Exhaust hose run into the groundhog hole. Plug up any escape holes, and you are done in less than half an hour.

I am assuming that you cannot shoot there? Maybe a Benjamin MAurauder pellet gun or other?

If you are in the PNW, I will come shoot them for you for free. Pellet gun or other.

Everybody around here has a Castor bean bush for those delicate situations. Drop a few beans in their hole or in mole tunnels and they go away. Good for those pesky neighbors also.

Put a conibear trap over the hole when you know it is in it and seal of the escape holes. Works like a charm.

Try to eliminate those varmints before they can undermine the slab any more than they already have.

There was a nice pole barn on a property behind mine where the groundhogs had pulled out a pile of dirt and gravel that was a good dump truck load of material.

The hose from an exhaust pipe as rockinbbar suggested seems to work well without having to worry about the dog or cat getting into a poison.

I've been suffering from a groundhog invasion. Shot one a few weeks ago. Last weekend I had to dig a goat kid out of one of their holes. 2 day old kid had fallen or crawled in and gotten stuck. I've declared groundhog jihad here...

why the cat?

I bet a hand full of moth balls in the hole would move them out.
