I want a #1 shiloh in 50-70. Will get 36" twist for 425/450 grain bullets and 28".
This gun will be used for casual paper punching and some hunting from blinds and stands.
Whats your thought on barrel weight, heavy or less heavy. I will get a half octagon/half round.
Thanks

Don't know if they will do a std weight in a 50-70 they won't in a 50-2.5" anymore. I have a 32" half rd/oct std in 50-2.5 and the recoil is tolerable with that twist and bullet range for a gun under 10#'s. I think you should call and ask them if they will. For what you outlined above the recoil will be comparable with a std to a 7-8 lb 20 ga pump and hunting loads. good luck Magnum Man

I originally ordered my #1 .45-90 with a 30" std half octagon, intended for hunting, but was warned the skinnier barrels can sometimes be troublesome. I finally changed the order to a std weight, full octagon. The weight should be reasonable.
I'm thinking if you're planning to use your 50 mainly for stand hunting, a little more weight should not hurt you.

I think you'll get by pretty well with the heavy barrel on that rifle.
the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to. www.historicshooting.com

My guess is that you'd prefer the heavy barrel after just a little while, that helps make the .50/70 even more comfortable to shoot. And don't give up on today's standard 1 in 26" twist. Mine shoots bullet #515141 just great. It does very well with Accurate Molds' #50-470T also. My C. Sharps .50/70 weighs 11 pounds and that is very nice.

This original Hartford has a 26 inch heavy barrel, and it's twist falls well short of the 1 -36, It's a bit longer than 1 -26 but not much.

I am going with the heavy barrel Actually I have an order in from 13 months ago and its getting close to build. I had ordered the heavy barrel, but wanted second and third opinions.
Thanks for all the advice.
