We just brought JOX "de l'toile d'Heudicourt" aka "the rookie" home today. Got good hopes for that korthals griffon. Do you use "griffons" in the US?

Gov. Perry had his new Griffon pup in the shop the other day!
Great looking Chiot, Grand Veneur!

I think it's a pretty good breed, multi-purpose & rough dog, which is what I need considering the local hunting habits and conditions.
I Still love th GSP but I feel it's good to up grade and enlarge hunter ' s scope.
What Kinds of games do you hunt with pointing dogs out there ?

We tried a Griffon rescued from a local shelter as an adult when my son was a youth.
The idea was to hunt pheasant and quail.
We made a noble attempt. The dog killed chickens in our yard every time she was turned loose and was impossible to cure of that habit.
Every time she flushed a pheasant, she disappeared over the horizon in pursuit of the flying bird. She usually came home a few hours later totally exhausted.
Then one day, soon after pheasant season opened, she did not come home. I think it likely that some hunter caught her in the field and took her home with him.
Our next hunting dog, a golden retriever, was a much better fit to our lifestyle and family status.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.

The ones I've seen have no problem of that kind. Fine tuners like the breeder competitor whom sold me the dog are able to obtain a dog which is going to stand still at flushing birds and gunshots, and wait for the command to retrieve the bird and bring it back. I don't think I can reach that level. I couldn't hunt with a retriever, I need a dog with enough strength and agility to face foxes and russian boars (which we regularly meet when hunting small games and birds in small woods), able to retrieve and catch a wounded roe deer, to retrieve birds and small games, but mostly to point at pheasants, partridges, hares, rabbits and woodcock. If he can bring me back ducks from water, it's a good bonus. Griffons are supposed to be tailored for that multi-purpose role, I hope i can get it from mine. Up to now, the pup seems to be much easier to train than the GSP. No more dung in the house in 4 days and the call back seems already very effective.

Yeah, personally I'm looking for a robust 25 year old female hunting partner, capable of back-country heavy pack trips. At 65 I've lost a step or two and 30 lbs of pack weight...
My wife may differ as to my choice... but my current partner is a year older and has had a triple by-pass. And now he has a knee problem....
It's costing us time on those 10-mile back in hunts....
We are probably gonna die doing this chit, but WTF!
The dog (Lab, 11 plus years old) is on his own.
The new one at the wife's insistence once we move back south to the Kenai is gonna be a mini Dachshund..
Custom made pack, no doubt.
GV - that's a fine looking partner!

Here's my Griff pup at 9 weeks or so. She is 2 yo now. Great dog. She has a great nose, points well, and absolutely loves to retrieve from water. She will track and bay, but is a bit soft. Great with birds, as she has never even broken skin on one, but too soft for fur. She is a total sweetheart and about perfect for me.

Training and hunting took a bit of a hit as my wife gave birth to our first this last fall. I suspect she will take back to it readily this coming fall, as I hope to have a little more time to get afield.

Pheasant, huns, quail, and of course ducks.
Don't really hunt fur, though my little schnauzer loves to tangle with raccoon and cats!
When I say "too soft", she just isn't the killer the little terrier is. Does great tracking though.
Congrats on the pup! I bet you two will have a lot of fun!

Pheasant, huns, quail, and of course ducks. May want to clarify for GV that "huns" are hungarian partridges. He may think you are talking about Germans. Great dog pics by the way.
