I have a very nice all original numbers matching 1964 GTO.
I keep blowing voltage regulators,it's on it's 3rd one right now. It's out!!!
If I haven't started it in a while and the battery is a little low,or if I take too long to start it,it will blow the regulator.
What are y'alls thoughts ? Alternator too hot ? Thanks, Mike

High RPM's kill regulators, high r's will sling the brushes out of them, an alternator and correct mounting bracket and belt will be your trouble free friends in this department.

Voltage regulator? a box mounted to the firewall or built inside the alternator?
May be a short in the wiring somewhere, pardon my above post on the generator, I shouldn't speed read hyped up on premium ethyl coffee.

IIRC, a missing engine to chassis ground wire can cause some problems like this one.

i would check for a short. mikeone; It sounds like a very nice auto you've got there sir. Whenever I'm working on weird wiring issues AND it's possible to do so, I'll bypass the original wire loom and run fresh wire to the hot and another fresh wire to the negative post on the battery. If that works fine, then at least you've got a starting point to look for the wire that's broken/shorting out - hopefully that made sense? Good luck with your car whichever way you decide and all the best in your hunts this fall too. Dwayne

If you're sure all the wiring is correct, the first thing I'd suspect is the ignition switch.

Check your engine ground. Could be loose or corroded or a bad cable.
