335 and a 50gr V-Max would be a good start.

28 grains H-335, and a V-max 40 grain bullet makes it the killingest 22 caliber out there. It was around and kicking ass way before some idiot AI'ed the 223...

There are lots of good 222 Mag powders out there.

748, 335, 2230, BLC-2 will all give top speeds and accuracy with varmint weight bullets and easy metering.
Older stuff like 3031, 4895 and 4064 has always worked. A 1969 IMR manual shows 27.5 grs of 3031 kicking a 50gr Hornady at 3,570 at 50,000psi. I used the same load and hit 3,500.

I happen to like Benchmark the best with 40 or 50gr. bullets.

26.5-27grs. will clock 3,500 in a 23.5 inch barrel with 50 grainers and I run 29 grs. for 3,900 with the 40's.
If looking for newer data/powders to work with, 5.56 NATO data will get you to about the same pressure as the SAAMI .223 Remington, but you still need to work up.

Its not worth a hoot for varmint splatter, but THE most accurate 100yd. load out of 4 222 Mags I've shot (even a fast twisted one) is 27 grs. Benchmark, 53gr Sierra MatchKing, Herter case and a Fed. 205 GM.

Shrap,

you provide some of the most entertaining pictures...

That is what makes shooting varmints so much fun....Love blowing up sage rats like that... and I tend to like the performance of the good old 40 grainers for how well they make things like that happen...

That reminds me, I have an unused 222 Mag reamer here.

Do you have any .223 barrels I can improve?

And please, no gay twist rates.....

That's called neutering a 222; but it might be spaying since they were .223's.....

No.

It "magnums" the 222.

Got some here to scramble, but the damn things are all 1-14.

But some .223 barrels......

Was shooting a bit of long range the other day and thought Id try the old Rem 'build' I put together, this one

[Linked Image]

It turned in a 1.25 inch group at 425 yds.( 425 was where my buddy put the backstop.dont ask, don't tell)

Schitty old 1 in 14 twistshooting 50 Vmaxes...

Just got another Remmy 222.

Thing put two weight bullets into the same cluster with a 2x8 Leupy....So I affixed the 10x FX and plan to come close to that...

How the hell was there no wind in Montana? wink

Nice.

That is above "panache"....

Those were Amaxes. Never tried themthey'll go into a .223AI

They're too good for the antiquated .222Mag.

Pass 223AI logistics,COAL and performance. Funnier than phugg to have Coke Bottles wax eloquent on slow-twisted Dumb Phuqqery as a "Trump Card"!

My (1) .224" centerfire wouldn't be a slow-twisted Retard Rifle. I've seen me weigh logistics too...mainly because I shoot a smidge.

I keep thinking about the 20,000+ pcs of 223 brass I've got and how a 21" 1-8" 223AI flings 75A-Max at 3100fps+.

Mainly because I've ALL the t-shirts and have seen the other side of the fence.

Hint..................(grin)

Plastikka for you.....and swirl it with Krylon.

50's with a plastic tip are about it in the Vixen mag box (like stick said, OAL).
40's work best in the magbox/land arrangement with that case and they'll run plenty fast.

It'd by hamstrung big time by COAL and a Montucky 223 would blow it away.

Will a .22-204 reamer clean up a .222 Mag chamber?

If so, you have better selection of brass, a tad more case capacity and opening the .204 to .22-204 is super easy. No fireforming needed.

But, I'm more than a bit prejudiced... cool

$17 a can for 75 A-Max. Have done better, but I tend to just scoop 'em up.

The only thing I don't shoot 75A-Max in,is things that haven't the RPM or COAL.

MUCH easier to open .204 to .224 and just rock and roll.

If the 80's('Max or Berger) shined,I'd simply shoot 'em. They do not,so I do not...nor do I know anyone who does.

You are ALWAYS going to be best served by taking notes and applying same.

Technically, I guess every piece of virgin brass fired for the first time is fire formed to the chamber.

I never tried to make a .222 mag round out of a .204 case. Just look at the specs. I think the .22-204 shoulder is a bit forward of the .222 mag shoulder, thus the set back.

aalf has posted photos of the differences, has done a lot of work with the .22-204. Do a search and you'll find those photos.

Pard is going the other way, turning Deuce Mag to 204...because the only 204 brass he could score was Hornady and it was ABSOLUTE phuqqing junk.............

Not much diff, really, between a 223 AI, 222 Mag and a 22-204 so far as burning powder and the results.

Something to beat dicks over...

I don't think Al ever had a 222 Mag. case.
One trip through an FL die, set up correctly, will give 110% positive headspace.

222 Mag, 222 Mag Ackley, and a 22-204 mock.

Prolly next spring, I'm hoping.

Hope to stay longer and make a wide berth, maybe see the cowboys up north and bring them all the handguns they care to shoot.

Reminds me,I should have another flat rate box here somewhere, with a freshly massaged bolt and threaded handle.

Midway was blowing out a bunch of bolt knobs, for like 6 Clams a pop and there should be a goodly herd of them either here,or enroute.

Generally takes a coupla days, for me to get all the mail sorted out............

I talked to shrap yesterday night. While drugged up pretty good, he still had plenty if life still in him. Not the time to take a wheelbarrow into the basement just yet.

Like I tell guys...jerking off is a pretty good trick, until you whittle your first chunk of ass, then it loses alotta appeal in direct extrapolation.

You're jerking off.

Hint.

Laughing!................

If it don't stabilize the 75A-Max...it's a DISTANT 2nd Fiddle.

Everyone built in accords to what bullets existed at the time. Hint.

One shot with a 75 will more than paint the picture in vibrant fashion. Trouble was,one couldn't gun 75's until they was invented.

Hint.............

Turbine1: Both of my Varminters in caliber 222 Remington Magnum LOVE the plain jane 50 grain Sierra Blitz bullets!
ALL manner of Varmints have "succumbed" to this accurate and lethal projectile from my 222 Magnums.
My Browning though does prefer BLC-2 powder whilst my Sako enjoys H 4895.
I use Federal 205 Match primers in both and Remington cases as well.
Best of luck to you with the new/old Remington 722, and good shooting right back at'cha!
GO Seahawks (I delayed my departure to our high country archery Elk camp to watch this game tonight so's the Seahawks had better put on a good show).
