There is this guy who has quietly been mentioning Ramshot powders a lot over the last year or so. I respect his opinions a lot, so thought I'd try a dose.

Test subject is a new semi-custom .308 using a factory takeoff Rem Ti barrel in a Rem 600 action and Bansner stock. This is a pretty basic project with a finished weight of 5 lb 12 oz. w/Leo 2-7x33

Fired 10 shots of RP factory 150 gr. for break in. First 5 groups for record with no development at all shown below.

Checking out TAC in .223, due to that "guy" convincing me to try. Burning clean (as "that" guy mentioned), are you noticing this in .308. Up to round 150 rds. in .223, WITH BLUE DOT, UNIQUE, IMR 4198 & TAC all through barrel. It APPEARS the TAC is actually removing some of the other fouling, at least from the "other" POWDERS. Seems to appear, being the visual observation, which may or may not be.

.308 with Ramshot is next to check out. That "other" seems to still like RL 15 though.

I haven't shot enough of it to say, as this rifle is brand spanky new and these were the first 15 or so shots fired through this rifle. I didn't take the chrony with me last night, but I will today. I will also be trying the BG and Hunter in my 6.5x284.

These were dumped charges and if follow up testing proves out, I may not have a lot more development to to do (at least with 165's)

There are more than one of those "other guys" who dote on Ramshot and RL-15!

And I bet there'll soon be more.

I have been trying Ramshot powders as well due to "that guy", buying a pound or two of X-Terminator,Tac, Big Game, and Hunter on previous orders. I have enough experience with them that I just order 8 pounders anymore. Super accurate metering, clean burning, decreased temperature sensitivity , and cheap. $95- for 8 pounds at Powder Valley I'm afraid it is going to catch on and they will raise their prices to match everyone else's.

Well, because of that same guy, I just tried some Ramshot Magnum in a 270 WSM with 140 Accubonds this morning. Preliminary results are very promising. I also threw all of the charges. I think that could start to grow on me!

Didn't have no problems making lots of velocity either!

Just got back from a bit more shooting.......more of the same kind of results............

All loads w/CCI-200, all loads thrown, no velocities as the wind blew the Chrony over.

.308 Win/ Remington factory barrel 2-7x33
165 Hornie/44.0 Big Game = 0.910"
165 Hornie/45.0 Big Game = 0.710"
165 Sierra/44.0 Big Game = 1.310"
!65 Sierra/45.0 Big Game = 1.080"

6.5x284/Shilen #1 6X42 w/HD
85 Sierra/52.0 BG = 0.865"
85 Sierra/53.0 BG = 0.920"
85 Sierra/55.0 Hunter = 1.150"
85 Sierra/56.0 Hunter =0.580"

Both rifles cleaned in a snap with 10 strokes of SC on a snug patch followed by 5 dry patches. Will go back out tonight if the wind dies down. (And I get the Chrony fixed)

I could get used to this.......

I use Ramshot in my 223AI, 257 Roberts, 280AI with 120 grainers, and in my 358 Norma. Great powder. I wish they had a powder in the RL22/H4831 range however.

Martin,

Rayner Shine in SK stocks it, it is also in the latest Wholesale catalog but I have no idea if they actually have any. Give Doug Rayner a call at 1-306-689-2654. Good service and good prices.

Ramshot Magnum is what I toke my 257 Wby with, 76 grains with a 100 grain TSX as I recall. I am also using Ramshot Hunter in one of my 260 Rem loads. The stuff meters like a champ. I agree that they need a powder in the RL-22 range. Good Stuff.

Why something in the RL-22 range? I have found that between Hunter and Magnum there's not really any performance "gap" in the Ramshot line, mostly because Magnum is so dense you can load it in pretty small rounds and still get fine velocities. It is great, for instance, in the .257 Bob with 120's, and 6.5x55 with 140's.

Essentially they have a Rl-19 powder (Hunter) and an RL-25 powder (Magnum) so don't see a real need to split the difference.

Going back to Jim's original post, I concur. I worked up a coyote/bobcat/whatever load in my 243 using Ramshot Big Game and 70gr. Hornady SPs. At 43gr., I get 5 shots in an inch square when I'm holding up my end. Three shots run 1/2" or beter. This is out of a Savage 110E that's had it's tupperware stock replaced with a laminate and bedded/free-floated. Trigger's been worked on too. I can't complain.

My 6.5x284 w/125-129 bullets, is at its best with powders in the RL-22 range like the 4831's. After reading the mention from MD about Magnum, I just scurried down to Reno to buy a lb. Will compare it to the very successful loads that I have w/4831. I thought that magnum was so slow, that I couldn't fit enough in the case, but we shall see.

I'm real interested in getting rid of the "logs" wherever I can.

It's slow, but it's so dense you can get a heavier charge in the same size case than you can RL22 or H4831.

I bought a lb. of Hunter and Big Game a couple of weeks ago to try out because of all the posts I've been seeing. Hunter has proven itself in the newest Ruger .257 Bob I've been working on. Probably a coincidence, but the loads mirrored H4350 for velocity and pressure signs nearly grain for grain. Accuracy was better with the Hunter. I've got to try it in the older Ruger, but with .06 difference in throat length , I'll have to keep loads seperated. Big game didn't work so well in either .250 Savage, one Ruger, one M99. Still got the 22-250 and 243 to try it in though.
