Just picked up a 99E in 243 and noticed an SP4 stamp on the top of the barrel just ahead of the frame. Any ideas what it's for?

SP == Savage Proofed
I believe this was stamped after a test fire. No idea why there's a 4 there.

Never noticed one before. I'll have to check my other rifles for this.
Thanks

Yep, the 4 would be the inspectors number.
As long as there's still lead in the air, there's still hope!
