So I'm thinking of upgrading my binoculars, I currently have a set of Hensoldt 8X30 individual focus binos. I really like them , never liked the center focus, however they are a dated bino and lens coatings have come along way since these were new. What is a good option to look at? I know Steiner makes a few but is there a "better" one out there?

My favorite binoculars are Fuji Polaris 7x50's with individual focus. That said, if you are doing much other than open range hunting you want to get something easier to focus. There is an 8x30 fuji that would be better, but they are getting rare.

You will not find a better IF bino than the Steiner Nighthunter XP 8x30 IMHO.

IF is a personal thing, but works for those it works for...

Are those pretty much the same as the 8x30 military ones?

I believe, the coating are more advanced. Exterior etc I would say yes.

Some good info here:

how do you use IF binoculars in the field? I can imagine it is hard to change focus fast enough to keep up with the moving target

You have to make the distinction between "IF" bino's and Steiner's set and forget for lack of a better term. With (most) Steiner's, once you set the focus to the user's eye sight, everything from 20 yrds or so is in focus from that point out. That is not the case with other IF bino's especially if they are a roof prism design.

This individual eye-piece focus glass by Docter is top notch. It is also bullet proof.

my minox 6.5X32 IF may be my favorite hunting binos and I hunt in the open west. I also have Zeiss and Leica binos, they have a bit better glass, but not much better. By the way, focus the minox at 30 yds or so and they are sharp to infinity.
