The title says it all. Today at the range I accidently mixed up ammo and shot a 7-08 cartridge through my Ruger Hawkeye 30-06. There is no visible damage, and subsequent groups were comparable to pre mix up groups. Should I have the rifle inspected by a smith and should I have concerns about damage to my rifle? Thanks for your thoughts on my humbling day at the range.

To be clear, only 1 round was fired.

I've seen it happen. The rifle in question, a Browning Stainless Stalker, suffered no ill effects. It continued to shoot very well the rest of the afternoon.
Oddly enough, the 7-08 bullet didn't hit the paper at 100 yards.

That means you must have broken at least one primary range rule.

I once fired a 7 mag from a 338, made a funny sound and hit the dirt in front of the target. No harm.

There was no way for the 7mm-08 shell to seal up against the walls of the chamber (SA in a LA chamber) and obviously the bullet is undersized to the bore so there is no pressure build-up there either. Bullet probably just sputtered out the end of the tube. I bet the case swole up pretty good, if not outright ruptured! It must be a CRF rifle b/c a push-feed primer strike would have just pushed the shell forward without setting it off. Just be glad nothing came back at you and don't do it again....

Lucky it wasn't a .308 in a .270 (or similar).

I ran a .280 Remington through my M1 and didn't know it until I tried to run the .280 through the resizing die. All it did was open up the neck of the .280 to 30-06. So now I have step necked .280/30-06 hybrid case. No harm, no foul to the M1.

The much more dangerous situation is doing the opposite--firing a larger caliber (than the rifle) cartridge where if the action and or barrel didn't fail, they'd be very close to doing even if the bullet managed to swage down and get out the barrel--a hand held pipe bomb. Stay safe.

Many years ago, a guy brought a 264 Browning into my shop. In the excitement of shooting at a elk, he put a 308 in. The rifle was completely destroyed. He was very lucky he wasn't seriously injured as when the bbl ruptured it blew the forend of the stock to pieces.

Ok...but keep in mind that 30-06 twist rate is a hair too slow for optimum stability with 7mm bullets...

A partner of mine used to hunt with his uncle. Uncle missed 3 bull elk in one day (I should be so lucky just to see that many) rattling 270 rds through an 06.

Fired an '06 in my Whelen once. It felt and sounded wierd, and missed the target, but no problems resulted.
BE CAREFUL! This mistake doesn't always have a happy ending.

Have a .308 fireformed to 35 whelen on my loading bench to remind me never to have two open boxes of different caliber on the shooting bench! Lucky for me I just suffered embarrassment and a lost morning of target practice. No damage to the .35.
