In loading for a .458 Win., I would like to utilize the concept of "Nitro for Black" load levels. By that I mean, pretend the .458 is a BP cartridge with about 93 grs water capacity. That is about the same as a .45-90 Sharps Straight. Then use Ross Seyfried's formula of 40% of the BP load in IMR 4198, along with a substantial amount of polyester fiber filler. This is supposed to duplicate BP performance at acceptable pressure levels.

My question is: are there other powders, such as Reloader 7, which can be used in this manner?

or just use black powder, and a compressed charge, and enjoy very low velocity variation.

edit to add, what kind of rifle are you using?

If you're looking for ~1300 fps with cast bullets, Unique or 2400 ought to work quite well. I never worked up such loads in my 458 lotts, but have used unique in the 500 jeffrey for 1200 fps loads with 470 gr cast bullets. Just like a giant 22rf laugh

Neither unique or 2400 require a filler and ignite fine in a case with lots of airspace. I burned a fair bit of unique and 2400 in my 350 rigby with cast bullet loads in the 1200-1400 fps range.

Or Trailboss to better fill the case.

Your Unique receipe will, however, give many more shots per pound - if he can find any to buy.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of SR4759 (if you can find any as it has been discontinued) with bullets from 300gr RN to 520gr cast and everything in between.

Re7 should give good results also if you can't find Unique or 2400.

I have fired Holy Black in my .458WM with no problems nor any corrosion issues. It generates enough pressure to fully obturate the brass, sealing it in the chamber and keeping the outside of the cases clean. Cleanup is simple with water, followed by oiling.
I tried it while waiting for my Shiloh Sharps to arrive. grin

I've used Accurate 5744 in large BP cases (.45-70, .50-90, .50-110) with good results.
