Jon:
I've hunted that area since 1990. I'll be hunting there again for deer during the 2nd season, and for elk during the 3rd season. I'm really an elk hunter and BTW I also get a deer tag. This year is different because I couldn't get the deer tag for the same season.
Most of the deer that I have seen have been down low, in the foothills. Look for isolated aspen groves and gullies choked with trees and bushes that are surrounded by sage and not too far from water. I've also seen them contouring along the hillsides using the same game trails as the elk.
We took both of these bucks down in the sage. The photo was taken at our camp which was almost at timberline, where we were hunting elk.
This is my son's first buck. That year we were camping low and he shot this deer close to camp.
Del took the big buck in a place that we call "Empty Gulch". There's a story behind that name. It's one of the places that I'll be checking out during the 2nd season.
