I visited a store today that builds and sells AR's. But I was more interested in a 1897 Win 12 Gauge, that they have on consignment. The fellow showed me this 1929 license that they found hidden in it. Can someone identify it? Sorry for poor cellphone Pics.

That is a tough picture but a nice find. I found a 1936 hunting license in the butt stock of a takedown 99 I bought years ago. That license is clearly marked with the state, purchasers and sellers identification. The ironic thing is that it was dated the same day of my birthday, just 23 years earlier. Good luck in your investigation.

The state is along the very top of the license as well as within the seal but I can't make either out. The name looks like it may have only 7 or 8 letters in it. I want to say Vermont but that just a guess.

Looks like the state name ends in "nia"...?
Was that original finish on the '97?
The serial puts production date in 1924.

Thanks for the year Rick. I think it is all original, but I don't know enough to say. Price $625 he said he'd come down to $575.

Have my fathers first hunting license dated Nov 1, 1917. An 8x11 inch very legal looking document issued by the county clerk in Laclede County, Missouri. Oldest one I have ever seen.
Found a 1924 receipt for a lever action Winchester shotgun rolled up in the butt stock of one I traded for. Anyone else ever find anything concealed in one. GW

Only one, so far. Small envelope from a L. A. sporting shop with the guys name, address and a Dec 19, 1914 date written on the back. It was in the butt of a 1913 production 1899-H.

I found a Wyoming antelope license rolled up and tucked in the stock bolt hole of a Remington 722 in .257 a few years ago.
Also have seen wooden matches, fire starter kits, etc. in the stock bolt cavity. One outdoor writer (can't remember which one) used to advocate keeping a packet of salt and pepper in there for times when a hunter was lost and had to live only on game meat.

Good eye Will! FWIW I found a name and address rolled up in the stock bolt hole in one of my first Savage 1899's, an early B model. While visiting in Billings Montana several years ago I found the house in the address but the people living there had no idea of who the gentleman was.
