My first 99 is going to be shipped "taken down" to my local FFL.

How do I get a takedown 99G from the 1920's back together?

Nagging questions like, "Do I have the lever open or closed when I insert the barrel?, come to mind.

Open lever/bolt
Screw in barrel
Hook rear of forearm into place
Tilt up/snap front of forearm up into place.

If you look at the forend you'll notice a metal piece recessed into the wood with a square cut-out. Resist the temptation to use it over the barrel lug as a wrench to gain leverage in seating the barrel. MANY forends end up cracked because of this technique. I have one that actually letters as being repaired at the factory before it left. Speculation is that the wood was the repair. It's the only obvious ( not so obvious) issue.

The only problems you might encounter are a barrel that turns past or will not turn to the index area so that the forearm will snap in. If that happens come back here for help (not in the instructions). Watch the bottom of the barrel in front of the receiver as the barrel screws in. You will see it come together.

If you do as he says in the video you have a VERY good chance of splitting your T/D forend. A way around that would be to use a strap wrench. One with a plastic body, not a metal one. OR you could make up or have something made similar to what I have done. I made mine out of delrin plastic with a brass insert. It works just fine and I done have to worry about my barrel OR the forend.

Nice job of work LBK. I like your use of brass for the insert so as not to mar the parts. (But where did you get a square drill bit? )

Of course, wouldn't a 14" Stillson pipe wrench work just as good and be a lot simpler? )

14" is for watch repair. 20" for gunsmithing.

Why not just smash it in with a sledgehammer?
I probably wouldn't even need to file the threads down that much.

I got a conjugal visit with my first 99 today at my local gun shop FFL
I hope to take possession next week.
Barrel turned in real easy.
Forearm snapped right in.
I still need to knock out the rear leaf sight and mount the Lyman tang sight.

There were a few dents from where prior owners missed when installing or adjusting the leaf sight. These did not show in the Gunbroker photos, but what the heck, I still like the rifle, and no amount of dings or scuffs will turn it into a gun made in China
