Does anyone know two piece base numbers (found on outside of packaging) for long actioned pre-64 Model 70. The gun was made in 1959. Unfortunately the vintage Redfield one piece base that was on the rifle was not correct because no scope could be dialed up enough to be bore-sighted. The rear of the base was positioned too high and reticle remained below or at bottom of the grid even on highest scope elevation setting. Thanks.

Do I understand it shoots TOO low with the Redfield? If it was still too low and you need more elevation, you need to raise the rear of the base. Always move the rear sight/base in the direction you want to move the bullet. You need to shim the rear of the base.
Am I all wet here or not understanding the predicament?

Send that 300 H&H to me since it's not as good as a husky. I'll give you $500.00 for it..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Standard action bases are #46 & #47, taller one goes on rear bridge. One of the above numbers will work on a magnum action, I think it is #46 and #48.
You mean there are rifles other than old Winchester leverguns ??

Weaver bases are lacking the quality I'd want on my rifles If I need a weaver style base I only use Warne. Warne Maxima Steel Bases are excellent. Find their base chart here: http://warnescopemounts.com/product/maxima-steel-2-piece-bases/

Not at all unusual to have to shim a pre-64 receiver (and other vintage rifle brands too); receivers and scope bases varied more then than they do today in the CNC age. Gunsmiths used to keep a selection of shim stock for just that purpose (Brownell's may still offer it pre-drilled and sized for various rifles). A selection of longer screws was required as well. Weaver bases work well, I like to put Burris Zee Rings on top of Weavers - makes a very strong mount.
