While posting about the silliness of agonizing over a 100 fps gain some in some cartridge or another, I made the analogy that 100 fps is about the speed of an exceptional little league fastball.
This reminds me of a "wrong place-wrong time story"
I grew up in a so-cal beach town playing baseball and basketball (short white kid......but quick). The family across the street had a son named Neville Saner who was a couple years ahead of me.
Neville was all everything in both sports. He dominated the league in basketball (6'6" as a Jr. IIRC) and as a pitcher, he was about unhittable.
As a senior, he was 6'8" and HSAA in both sports and had scholarship offers up the wazzoo. He had two clear career paths. Eventually, it came down to Baseball at USC or Basketball at UCLA. The Bruins had already won a couple or three NCAA titles with a 6'5" center, and coach Wooden recruited Neville pretty hard. There was some thinking then that at 6-9 or 6-10 or whatever, he topped out at, Neville might be "too tall for baseball" (for example at the time he would have been taller than any player in the bigs).
So....the agonizing decision was made, and Neville went to UCLA to play hoops. At the time it looked like the Bruins would continue to win titles year after year (and of course, they did too)
But....The year after Neville went to UCLA (his soph year) the Bruins recruited a skinny kid from New York to a scholarship and Neville's future went down the drain.
The skinny kid's name was Lew Alcindor and the rest is history.
I don't know what happend to Neville, but there was a case where 100 fps, properly applied could have really changed something.
Wrong place, wrong time.............. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Met more than a few athletes that really were special and did not have the drive when they hit the first couple bumps in their roads...
A lot happened during the years we decided to stay away from the Olympics. A roommate was chosen as the #2 goalie for the soccer team...

Just got a PM from one of our posters that Neville is teaching school in San Diego.
I didn't know him well, but certainly, he could have switched back to baseball and possibly could have made the bigs. Then again, if he had ever developed a face up game, he might have made his mark as a forward. Fact is, when he got to UCLA, he had never done anything except play with his back to the basket on the low post. (never had to do anything else)
