I went back to check on that Win97 today. Found out that there were actually two California license found in the Butt Stock. So I brought it all home. The earlier one expires in 1927 but I think was issued in 1926, when the fellow was 16. I can't see place to list a deer tag #, as appears on the 1929 license. Would the 1926 license have also been good for one or more deer?

Interesting that the 1926 license expires in the middle of the year and is only $1 while the 1929 license expires at the end of the year, includes a deer tag and cost $2 ($27.82 in todays money). I can't make out an issue date on either one.

I can't tell the dates looking at them here either. I'm wondering if the added $ bought the deer tag.

I wonder if both license were issued for a half year or only the one?

I've got a pair of blacktails my grandpa shot in 1924. Back then you were allowed two. He jumped them one at a time, near together, and got each with a back of the head shot. SOO THE STORY GOES! grin

The "tag" on these antlers is a wire loop and a clamped on "tie" holding them (permanently) on. I'm assuming Oregon, never verified.

I have a 1935-36 California hunting license that too cost $2.00 and expired in June 30. Mine lacks the artwork and looks more like a standard license. June 30 is the end of the California fiscal year.

That's cool and interesting that the 29 license expired at the end of the year, but the expiration was back to June 30 of the next year, for 35-36. June 30 would also probably have been prior to any Gamebird/Animal season.
Thanks for posting the link Gary. So in 1929 you would buy the hunting license for $2. Then if you wanted a deer tag you paid another $ for a deer hunting license with a tag. The storekeep/cleark would likely write in the corresponding numbers before giving you the deer license.
So Rick I guess it would have cost $3 to deer hunt in 1929. would that be $41.73 today?

$41.73 is less than the last fishing license I bought in California.

On the other hand 41-bucks would have been a kings ransom in the middle of the Great Depression. My grandfather worked for the LA County Fire Department for 17-bucks a month. I'm sure a lot of game was taken without license.
