I bought a Savage Rascal youth 22lr , it weighs 2.66lbs and is tiny. I need a -real- small light weight scope/red dot because the factory peep sights is a little coarse to say the least. When I shoulder the tiny rifle being up close makes the peep sight seem like the ring is a half inch in diameter or I can have a cheek weld on the butt of the rifle which isn't steady. What's out there that is tiny and light weight ? It will be a trapline gun -LOTS of walking .
Thanks -Mike

SWFA has the Docter Red Dot Sight on for 50% off ($249.95). I have one of those I purchased a few years back. It's tiny, weighing only 0.9 oz, but it held its zero even after using it on a 12 gauge turkey gun and then some informal target practice on a S&W 500 Magnum. I'm going to use it as an off-set sight on a scoped rifle to help me pick up my target. It's great little red dot...I may buy another one.

I have the Weaver on a Win 1300 turkey gun. Works fine and I only paid $50 new for it. You don't have to line anything up like with a tube style red dot. If the dot is on the target, you will hit it.
I had a Bushnell Trophy red dot. Not one in pic, but the "next step up" slightly more expensive model. It broke in like 7 shots.....

That little Savage is drilled and tapped. The receiver is too small to have the typical .22 groves to mount a scope/red dot. It's receiver is only about .815 where the scope base would sit. A normal scope base sticks out each side like Obama ears. A base on the rear hangs out over the bolt handle slide slot so far that the bolt can't be raised.
I, too, have been looking for an optic and mounting system that would not overwhelm the balance, weight, and size of the little rifle. Avoiding the Hubbel effect with optics for the Rascal isn't that easy.
Your using the Rascal for exactly what I thought of when I first saw it. A secure, hand made, form fitting scabbard mounted to the packbasket is easy to construct. (bike innertube)
If you practice a little you will be quite surprised at how accurate you can shoot it. The eye will naturally center even in a blurry rear sight such as the Rascal has. You'll be able to pop a fisher between the eyes OK. I do admit that my 8yr old grandson was soon shooting as well as I soon after purchasing it this last summer for him to learn to shoot on. I made the excuse that 8yr old eyes work better that 75!
If you find an optic that works well with the Rascal please send me a PM about what you have found.
Best to you in your search.
Jim

Thanks for all the help you'all , I have pretty much decided on the little Leupold [providing it's Made in USA] . The dot sights look good as do the peep sights on the gun and would work great for dispatching trapped critters --BUT the first time I peek over a hill and see a coyote standing broadside at 75yds -there's a great chance I'd be ticked off for not having a scope on the little rifle. When you check traps every single day -you happen onto quite a few shots. Jim , Weaver makes some 2 piece weaver bases just for the Savage Rascal . I'm going to use them and Leupold aluminum Rifleman rings in the low height ,should make a light weight little package that will still whack a critter like a regular 22lr. https://store.savagearms.com/scope-mount-kit-for-rascal.htmlAlso -no need for a trap basket here [florida] we can only use snares so I'll just throw the little bugger over my shoulder. Thanks again -Mike

I have the Weaver on a .22 handgun. It is very compact and I can hit very well with it. It is on my squirrel pistol.

Thanks for making me aware of the Rascal mount kit. Seems that a guy would look to the mfgr. site for product attachments. I didn't. I think I'll look for a small red dot. Something quite lite and small.
In this corner of the nation trapping without a basket would be like attempting to fish without a line.
Thanks again for the heads up for those bases.
