I picked up a LNIB Leica 1000 rangefinder. Don't have the box in front of me as I'm on vacation. I was told the owner got it for Christmas last year so I assumed it was a new model.

Anyway, I can't find anything about angle compensation on it? I was under the impression that the 1000 model had angle compensation which worked at bow ranges and the 1600 angle compensation only started at 100y; which is why I bought the 1000.

Is there a particular model / year when angle compensation was added?

I got a great deal on it but a tad annoyed that this feature is missing. In hindsight I should have checked if it was important to me; but then someone else would have picked it up in the time it took me to check :-)

Right now I will only really use angle compensation for measuring distance to my tree stand. Since I pre-measure distances from different spots in the field to the stand, I suppose I can always measure to the base of the tree rather than to the stand to get equivalent horizontal distance.

At distances under 20 yards I have not found that it makes any difference

Ok. I'm an idiot. Guess I don't really need angle compensation unless I'm out hunting in the mountains.

I did some simple calcs and with my tree stand at 15 feet high - or 5 yards and distances up to 50 yards line of sight, equivalent horizontal distance is pretty damn close to the line of sight distance (49.5 yards for 50 yards, 19.37 for 20 yards).

I ain't going to be changing my holdover point for that margin of error so no real point I guess changing the range finder right now.

I'm hunting antelope in Wyoming in in a month and I doubt its going to make a difference there either unless I climb a real big hill to shoot an antelope in a valley.

I guess I will switch over to the 1600-B when it is time to move up as I don't require the angle compensation at bow distances.

Still curious about when this feature got added.

I believe it was added when they changed from the 1000 to the 1000-R. Not sure on the exact timing - think it was at SHOT in January 2013. The old model was on sale for a long time after the -R version was released though,
