There was a thread a few weeks back about the best way to sharpen a blade, perhaps these folks should be consulted. It is like a five way partnership: steel maker, bladesmith, sharpener, plane maker and woodworker.

It's not hard once you get the hang of it, to sharpen a high carbon jap chisel or planer blade to unbelievable sharpness.

Murray Carter in Oregon gives classes on blade making and sharpening. He was in rural Japan for 17 years apprenticing with a master, who named Murray as his worthy successor to a multi-generational family tradition. He also takes people on tours to Japan to see where the most valuable sharpening stones are found, swordsmiths, etc. Look him up and tell him I referred you.
