Yup, that's a pretty good analysis of most builds.....

To my thinking there isn't a whole lot of need for a 338 in texas other than the fact that you want one. A 9.3 is just about as much over kill.

Need to re-name the 9.3 BS the 366 Nilgai then there would be a whole slew of them in South Texas. Or make it with the whizzum case. That would be a pig thumper for sure.

Dang, I hate to even post you guys are having so much fun. That's what it's about though isn't it? Our farmers and ranchers frown on us killing their prized 2,000lb bulls here in Texas and that's about all that's available for a 9.3. I know the 338 is not much less but it is a more normal cartridge of choice. I am not new to loonyism. I have owned the 25-20,22H,250Savage, 250AI,257Bob,257AI,6-7X57'S,7X57AI,7Mag,30Gibbs,338-280AI,338-06 and now some Savages in .300,243,and hopefully 303. So if you guys can't come up w/a new short action cartridge as a thumper I'll just have to go w/the boring 338Federal od maybe the 338RCM. THANKS GUYS IT'S BEEN FUN! No cursing, no name calling, and lots of banter. powdr

If you decided to go .338 RCM send me a PM. I might be able to help you out with some stuff.

Somebody oughta plumb a 338 SAUM. Got just a bit more case capacity that the RCM and twinned up with a 6.5 SAUM, you'd have the coolest North American duo rolling.

I just may do that John and thanks for the offer. Can't find brass anywhere but I never let that stop me. I am really considering the RCM more now. There's no sense in leaving all that velocity on the table and is often said, you can always load it down to 338Federal velocities. Thanks again John. Can't wait to get my 99 bases, rings, bullets, dies and barrel from you. powdr

Hornady isn't going to make virgin 300 RCM brass for quite a while. Its such a short run that they will concentrate on the large items, until they catch up. Until then their 300 and 338 RCM's will be making sounds like Heinz. I'm going to shoot up enough 300 RCM's in my new Ruger left hand M-77 Compact, to build up a supply of fired brass, for this winter.
I'm shooting factory ammo in my Ruger Compact M-77 and then recycling its fired brass in my 6, 7, & 8 mm wildcats.

Obviously, as has already been pointed out, a 7-08 would be the logical choice, but if not that, then the 7 WSM would be great if you're willing to change the bolt face.

If you can't do it with the Springfield Thumper, you might as well stay home and watch Happy Days re-runs.
