I need to come up with a deer load for my 10 year old daughter in short order. I have a Ruger American compact in .308 Win for her to use. Looking through my components, I found a box of 135 gr. Sierra spitzer pistol bullets and a couple pounds of AA-5744. Thinking around 30 grains of the 5744 should make a reasonable deer load. Shots will be under 100 yards.

Sound right or am I missing something ??

30 should be just fine... not my first choice, mainly because of the retort ( kaboom) will be louder than other reduced load powders...

if that doesn't bother your daughter, the accuracy will be just fine..

you're duplicating a 30/30 essentially...

if you have or can find some.. SR 4759 is my first recommendation.. 4198 being second..

Thanks fellers !!!

Went with the 30 gr. 5744.

Shoots next thing to lights out at 100. Did the initial dial-in at 25 yards and 4 went through the same hole. VERY minimal recoil and really did not notice an overly obnoxious report....... even for the short barrel on the youth gun.

I think there's a big old momma baldy in trouble come this Saturday.

Good luck this weekend.

I use 27g of 5744 under the 150SST for my Cousin's 7yo boy. Very mild recoil.

I've used 37ish grains o 5744 with 125 BT. Works well.

Seafire, how does H4198 compare? I bought some to try for no great reason other than the 5744 is pretty dirty and has a big muzzle flash.

35.5 grains of IMR 4198 is listed as the max load with the 150 grain bullet for the 308, and 30 grains for the 300 Savage...

same for Hodgdon's 4198....

I've always preferred to run 30 grains with any 308 sized case...

It has less muzzle flash than 5744 (IMHO), and less retort...

I think it burns cleaner also...with the thumbs up going to Hodgdon's version for that..

not mentioned, but the cleanest ( again IMHO) is RL 7, close to the same burn rate...I run a charge of 30 grains of that also as a standard in 308 sized cases ( 243, 260, 7/08 )....
