While it's true that many of the small rural places don't pay their way....and can't- the downside of having so much government influence which doesn't support infrastructure is that it's difficult to gain any equity in a lot of places as well. simplify that statement for me would ya. Saint Michael- the only useable deep-water transfer point between open sea and river near the Yukon delta went from being a prosperous non-native town of several thousand alongside the Native village of Taciq to a small mostly Native village of a few hundred.
You should google "ghost towns", they're under chit happens You might own your own place in one of the hugely supported places - paying mightily to own it. Yet it has no value anywhere close to what you've invested due to the fact that no one who might want it could afford it and/or they can get a gov sponsored dwelling for less than they price of interest on the principal. Sound investment advice right there. Those who keep getting (needing) because they can't sustain are not the winners. While there are more than lots of negatives to being in the taker category- I have no problem with those who have -because of some largess not of their own doing- sharing their bounty with those who have been shorted of the same opportunities. As such, the losers vote democrat to insure legalized extortion continues.

What you want the state to do? They won't build natural gas pipeline their is no need for it outside Alaska... Only way a natrual gas pipeline will be built is when their is a demand for natrual gas outside Alaska.

Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

If you build something of your own - perhaps because you believe the gov't doesn't owe you; or perhaps because you don't qualify for gov't handouts- your place essentially has no value greater than pennies on the dollar invested when it stands next to the 'free stuff' which the gov't provides. IOW it's hard to compete with the gov't when they get involved in housing. It's a basic no-brainer that many folks don't think about. You might own your own place in one of the hugely supported places - paying mightily to own it. Yet it has no value anywhere close to what you've invested due to the fact that no one who might want it could afford it and/or they can get a gov sponsored dwelling for less than they price of interest on the principal. Sound investment advice right there. So again where is the incentive to get off/stay off the gov.tit? People view reality largely based on their own backyard. Whether 'I' earned it or not- as long as I have mine- why should I worry about anyone else; that seems to be a prevalent attitude. As I pointed out previously when the government gives the gov't takes away. Some gain- some lose. Anchorage (Ship Creek) only exists because the railroad came through. Wasilla would have been nothing had not Anchorage sprung up. It's kind of hard for the major population center to bitch about what other places get when they exist on the backs of some of those same places. Anchorage might be largely responsible for electing our representatives but they aren't elected to represent Anchorage alone - or Juneau- or Fairbanks; they represent all of Alaska - even those parts some of us don't care about.

So again where is the incentive to get off/stay off the gov.tit? It might come in the form of a no bid contract, leases, mining, timber sales and tourism. Of course there will have to be administrators and workers. It might even be done in house, but highly doubtful. People view reality largely based on their own backyard. Whether 'I' earned it or not- as long as I have mine- why should I worry about anyone else; that seems to be a prevalent attitude. Reality is, that capitalism has always provided the money for all the other isms. It's kind of hard for the major population center to bitch about what other places get when they exist on the backs of some of those same places.
Again, that sounds a lot like robinhood, take from the worker and give to the jobless. When the bottom fell out of sea otters, did the russians give the natives food stamps? Anchorage might be largely responsible for electing our representatives but they aren't elected to represent Anchorage alone - or Juneau- or Fairbanks; they represent all of Alaska - even those parts some of us don't care about. Everyone wants something for their buck, and some want something for nothing. You may not believe it, but I heard when times got tough way back, some folks out there turned nomadic and moved to a better place to survive.

Again the existence of the largest population center in Alaska happened at the behest of the Fed Gov (and at the expense of private enterprise: capitalism in other places). Some people don't appreciate some things when they get them for nothing. I'm not saying it was a bad deal overall; but I also don't think it is unrealistic for the haves to correct some of what was ruined for some of the have-nots. Unfortunately defending that idea clouds some of the real issues that continue to be so wrong. (I would have a hard time saying that the 'railroad to Nome' is somehow worse than the railroad to Fairbanks some 90 years ago was however. In fact it might even make more sense.)
I have to say that living in Fairbanks does seem like easy street compared to life in the bush in so many respects. Things are so cheap.

I also don't think it is unrealistic for the haves to correct some of what was ruined for some of the have-nots. I thought for sure Jimmy Carter was the last correction; but course, by the time obama is out of office, we won't won't owe anyone on the planet anything. Although, the perpetual handouts will continue as long as socialists keep getting elected, or we go broke. I have to say that living in Fairbanks does seem like easy street compared to life in the bush in so many respects. Things are so cheap. Prices are even lower in the lower 48; but what would prices be on say the moon?

Again the existence of the largest population center in Alaska happened at the behest of the Fed Gov Far too many folks in the state believe that they have earned what they have without really thinking about what they are saying! Examples: Mail Subsided, fishing and hunting permits/management-Subsided , fuel-Subsided, roads, airports. bridges-Subsided, police protection-Subsided, your flush toilettes-Subsided, clean drinking water-Subsided, all farming-Subsided ...Hell the first farmers in the valley were 100% Subsided. With out the government's foot print this state would not exist. Pull all of Jber out and see what happens to Anchorage. Clost the university system and how will that impact your economy? the answer is Subsided Take a few seconds before you pull the "F" bomb trigger and think about it.
