I'm looking at a Savage 99 with serial # C334891 stamped on the receiver. It has a straight stock and the fore arm is the style with the finger recesses. I can't track down this number. Any idea how old it is and what model?

99-358 Brush gun. Made from 1977 to 1980 per Murrays. Should have a rubber recoil pad on it as well. Someone will be along with a more precise date.

Thank you gentlemen. That was a good year, the year I turned 21 and bought my first lever gun, a model 94 Winchester 30.30.

My own .358 was originally a brush gun (C452XXX), but I much prefer the EG style rifles. Swapped out the stocks with an older EG and changed the lever to a pistol-grip curved style. I now have an "EG" in .358 caliber.
It's great except I keep wearing out the blue on the side of the lever.....looking for the safety (where it SHOULD be located) until I remember it's on the tang.
The original "Brush Gun" stocks and lever are stored....with a note to my children.....so it can be returned to "original" form when I die. Until then I will hunt with my EG .358.....and maybe they will too. "Value" is only important if you are selling....and I hope the next generation will be users.....not sellers.
