I'm tired of hunting with the open sights on my muzzleloader and am trying to squeeze a scope in the budget. This is a rifle that get hunted with for 1 - 2 weekends out of the year and I just can't justify a Leupold or anything else along those lines. In looking at different boards I have yet to hear anything bad about the Aetec. SWFA has the 2.8 - 10 on sale for $125 and thats within my price range. Has anyone had one crap out on them?

LSU Fan,

I bought a .223 this spring and it had a 3.8-12 x 44 Aetec on it. I like it, groundhogs hate it. I will admit that I'm a Leupold fan though. When the time (and money) is right, I'll probably put a Leupold on the .223. I'd say if you're comfortable with the Aetec for the 1 - 2 weekends out of the year, take the plunge. Any you can get your hands on at the local shop to test look?

My son has one on his Savage 308. We've had no problems with it and he likes it.

LSU fan, I've heard good things about the Atec from some very good sources. The 2.8x10 sounds like a lot of overkill for a muzzle loader however. I think I'd look for nice 4x or lower fixed power scope. There are tons of used scopes on ebay and I've had good luck with the ones i've bought there. There are some used burris scopes (same type warranty as leupold) on ebay now in your price range. Good luck, Weagle

The thing about a scope is they can go from rifle to rifle. I've got an old 3X Leo that been on 3 rifles and one slug firing shotgun. It stands ready for another as I write this.
I, too, don't see why you'd want a 2.5-10. BTW, when they get that cheap, don't expect much.
I would think a 2.5X, or a 4X would work out better. E

A freind had one on a 7mag. While hunting on a cold day in November, the scope stayed on full power when the selector ring was turned.

He never attempted to have it repaired, nor will he own another.

LSU fan- I have had 4 Aetec's all of them 2.8x10's. Two of them wouldn't hold zero, had them fixed, same problem after 30 or 40 rounds one on a 308, one on a 243.
I had 2 others one on a 7 mag, one on a 223, no problem with either one.
With a 50% hit-miss on quality, I sold them all.
I bought 3 new Bausch and Lomb 3000 series 3x9's from Bear Basin for the same money as the Aetec's. Very happy with these scopes. -Keith

Had 1 that lasted through 3 seasons and survived to sell with the rifle; had another that lost glued lenses after 22 rounds of 06 in a 9 pound rifle. It's a crap shoot. Why not look at buying a used Leupold. M8 fixed 4's and low powered variables fill a full page and a half at ebay. Most sell for under or around the price range you mentioned.

From what I've seen of the Leupolds on Ebay, they usually go for more that what I can find them for new.
Had one that POI changed from dead on, to 4" high and 2 1/2" left at 100yds when I went from 3x to 9x. While most scopes will change some, this was just too much for me. I know other Aetec scopes that have been working well for quite a while.

I'd look at ebay or some other classifieds for a used Leo, Nikon Monarch, Burris, or Sightron.WD
