When Elvis Presley hit the road in June 1977, he was an absolute mess. He was only 42, but years of prescription drug abuse and horrifying dietary habits had left him bloated, depressed and near death. This isn't the Elvis that you want to remember.
On June 19th in Omaha, NE it was another sad night until Elvis sat down at the piano near the end to deliver a rendition of Unchained Melody." As guitarist Charlie Hodge held a microphone, Elvis dug deep and poured his heart into the song.
His body was falling apart, but his voice remained almost as powerful as ever.
The tour limped along through five more shows, wrapping up June 26th, 1977 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN.
He died less than two months later. Heres the song...
Elvis plays 'Unchained Melody' for the first time live before the albums release at the Pershing Municipal Auditorium, Lincoln, Nebraska, June 20, 1977.

He performed here in 75 or 76 when he was fat & bloated, but still could sing his ass off. Took my Mom to see him for that Concert. One hell of a show! Older women were passing out and throwing their panties on the stage like crazy!
At that time, he had probably scored with more women than any other man alive!

Saw him in Odessa, TX in 76. My mother was the one that pushed us to go. I still think that concert was the best live performance I have seen to date, by anyone.
Sadly my mother died just a short time after we saw Elvis. He followed not long after.
During the intro you could tell he was having trouble breathing. Not anything close to an expert but he sounded like he was dealing with congestive heart failure to a degree. I was an Elvis fan from high school on but I never threw my panties at him.

My Mom has always been a huge Elvis Fan. She saw him here in 1957, when she was a Sr. In High school. Her and a bunch of her High school girl friends drove to Memphis in '58 to go see Graceland. She said that he waved at them as he drove his pink Cadillac in the gate.

I saw him in 71-72 in Albuquerque. Surprised he showed up to a town that small. Amazing show. In his day he was as good as it comes.

Now, that, is eloquent.
