Never been there, but I'll be there in January.

No. But, we have a place in the mountains NW of there in Cherokee, Whittier, Sylva area. Got a friend living on the res with his full-blood Indian wife in Cherokee who takes care of the property for us when we're not there.
If you've got a question, he might have some insight. Hell of a good guy.

Fairly rough part of the state in my humble opinion.

Lived up the road at Ft. Bragg for a few years many moons ago, seem to remember a bad chicken plant fire there that killed several people.
It's a beautiful part of the state, lots of farm land, don't know about the quality of the people though.

Will be there for a few days to visit the College. Just seeing if any campfire members live there and were interested in dinner.

Been there a few times as my dad grew up in Laurel Hill. Will be going back next summer for a reunion, but last time was over ten years ago (grandma's funeral). What kind of info are you looking for. Seems like a poor area to me. Most spend their lives working in a single factory and a few families own most of the property/land. This is just a Midwestern's view point from what I've seen.

Make sure you eat at General MacArthurs...great country buffet...if it's still there...been a while since I've been there...ask a local...they'll know how to point you at it...couple of miles from St. Andrews.
