All you 270 Winchester aficionados perk up, there's a great article in the latest Handloader magazine about the 270.

Did it mention that you have to shoot twice to knock a hole through a tin can?

Just bought a '52 standard weight M70 because of that article, and because the deal was too good to pass up. Have several pounds of Ramshot Magnum powder to get through.

I have a '52 standard weight also and it gives great groups...mostly I've used the traditional H4831 just because it works.

I like the 270 win. I don't have to read a magazine article to know that. They are very easy to load for. I remember when kitch was having problems with the accuracy of that rifle. I'm glad to see that it is shooting good now. If I remember right, he had to relieve a little in the barrel channel and now it's shooting great. Correct me if I'm wrong??? Kitch, you didn't glass bed that rifle did you?

My best group was with 60 gr H4831 and 215 primers but, it was nothing to write home about. As you can see if you discount the flyer to the right, the group measured 1.250". Counting the flyer it opened it up to 1.855".

The five I used with CCI200 primers were among the largest groups. I have the forend and back screw torqued to 25 in/lbs and that's pretty snug. I doubt I can go much further than that-maybe 30 or so at best. It was breezy but not so much it would have thrown off groups much if at all. After bore sighting and getting on paper, I adjusted the sights to hit 3" high at 100 yards so, I was aiming at the red circle.

Yep, you're right. There were several area in the barrel channel that were black from all those years of the barrel making hard contact with the stock. I fixed that little problem and then bedded the action. It will consistently, as you can see from the other photo, into around 3/4".

You can see the trouble spots in the barrel channel that are no more. I don't use that front screw either. That would not be beneficial after the bedding.

Good deal kitch. If I remember correctly, you were a little hesitant about bedding your pre 64. I think it was a wise decision. Your rifle is shooting great!! Pretty typical pre 64 model 70 270 Winchester now...

Those groups were a little surprising since it was done with a Lyman All American Perma Center 4x scope. I was well pleased. Hell, it outshoots my Tribute rifle!

It's amazing how well some of these old rifles shoot. My pre 64 270 fwt is also a very good shooter. Very consistent and not too finicky. It also shot very well with the old steel tube weaver k4, but I pulled it and put on some modern glass that isn't as prone to fogging.
