Just came onboard, recently over the past year I came into two Mod-99's, and a Mod-1899 from around 1925. I bought that one from my neighbor, his grandad owned back in the day. You can see it was fitted for a "Maxim Device", the device is long gone but the rifle still retains the thread cover. It's chambered for .300 Savage, the other two rifles from the 1950's are chambered for .308 (scoped), and .303 Savage. The scope is an old model K4 Weaver.

The rifle pictured with the Garand is actually a Model 99. For some reason Savage stamped some models 1899 until about 1925/26. They had changed the nomenclature from 1899 to 99 in 1921. The EG in 303 would have to be 1940 or maybe 1941 since 303 was discontinued about then. The EG didn't have checkering until 1940. Savage introduced 308, 243 and 358 in 1956 so the 308 EG would be produced between 1956 and 1959. There's an oval on the front of the lever boss. It has two numbers and a letter. The letter indicates the year of manufacture and should be N=1956, P=57, R=58, or S=59. This system started in 1949 with the letter A and skipped O and Q.

Learning new things already, now I,ll have to look at the lever handles and write down what I see. That is a Rem 03A3 in the picture, picked that up in a horse-trade at the LGS where I acquired the 99's, swapped a well used .22 pistol for the Rem. I have a thing for milsurps also.

wyo1895, That top pic is not an M1 Garand, but a Springfield 1903 rifle. The later version was modeled the 03A3.

Both were chambered original for 30-06 cal. Early prototype Garands were tried out in .276 and .256 caliber, but not adopted.

Since I have sent many rounds down range with an M1 Garand I should know the difference. There's even one stuck way back in my safe. My book is on my mind every waking moment and I've been making a lot of these snafu's lately. Thanks for the heads up Dave. David

Over the Summer I had put money aside for a new metal detector, underwater type by Garret. Right at that time the neighbor came over and offered up the 1899/99, time to get rid of them cause his kids had no interest. I offered him $300 on it which was fine with him, the Maxim Device feature was a plus for me. Never heard of that. Now I have to save my money again for the detector.

Welcome to the board! You should buy a lottery ticket or two. Nice rifles.

Welcome, I"m located in NW MI, shoot a 358R and spent today looking at all the new scrapes in the area we hunt.
Everything looks good for the 15.
Love those old guns, they always seem better made than whats on the shelf today.

hey...no problem.. It is rare on this forum that I can speak with much correctness.. I am always learning from all the folks here.

Plus, the folks here are top notch! (catch my Savage pun wink )..oh boy, guess I better hang up after that one.

I also have a couple Savage bolt guns in 30-30, an earlier one by Savage and then a later one after they bought Stevens. Never saw a bolt 30-30 until I moved to Michigan from Illinois, everyone seemed to have a Winnie 94 or Marlin 336. I seem to find these old guns at the LGS, no one is holding onto "old family" guns anymore when the seniors die. They get brought in for average cash, plus the mindset is getting different about having firearms around. I do some horsetrading or cash at that shop, done well for my gun pile over the past few years. Did not know my humble 99's were somewhat desirable, there not going anywhere soon. The lever codes on my three rifles are per my pics, scoped .308-11K, the .300 Sav-15B, and the 1899/99 .303 Sav-K, for those interested.
