well, 80 yard shot, straight on to the deer, 130 grain hornady at about 2700fps. Hit deer lower neck straight on, hit the front of the back bone, and exited a couple of inches from entry hole to the side. Now it DID do a bang flop on the deer, but i would have thought that bullet should have gone straight back into the body cavity. Deer was looking at me with front to me, and a perfect shot, and a bang flop, but it sure as heck didn't penetrate for what it's worth. It's NOT going to be used on elk in december. Also, experienced hunters in camp heard wolves one early morning behind our camp, they were howling. Interesting, in that this was center part of state around williams az., the wolves are all suppose to be on the arizona/new mexico line. Somebody forgot to tell them to stay put.

No surprise if you were using a 130 but doesn't need to go any further than the thickness of a neck. As long as it severs the spinal cord it could stop there. Agree on it's use for elk unless you know of a really stout bullet and get a perfect shot.

lol,i'll kill anything in north america with a 270
you shot a deer in the neck and with bone after bone stacked in a deers neck that bullet hit more bone then you will ever hit with broad side shot.

My dad and brother used it for years, on deer and moose. Good caliber.

Interlocks are simply cup and core bullets.
Sometimes, the air you 'let in'matters less than the air you 'let out'.

It would have the exact same effect on a big elk as it did on that deer. Sounds okay to me.
But I do think there are better elk bullets than that one for the 270. Why not a 150 Partition?

I have been shooting a .270 since 1954. No complaints so far from antelope, deer or elk.
Nothing like the well-placed shot. If you make a Rock Springs head shot, doesn't matter what cartridge you use.

With the right bullet, the 270 is GTG for any elk that ever walked. While no doubt the 130 Hornady has taken many piles of elk, it would not be my first choice for wapiti, however I certainly would not go home if that was all I had in my pocket while elk hunting.

i killed a bull nilgia with a 270 130 gore lokt, for those who don;t know bull nilgia have a thick grizzle plate over their shoulders just like a big boar hog,it had no problem penetrating it. that 500+# bull fell like a switch had been pulled.

You have to be within 80 yards for a 270 to kill a deer! Not very good.

Not doubting the op, strange things happen, but I've shot a bunch of deer in the last 40 or so years with the 270 and 130 Hornady. There were a few times I've wished it was a little tougher, but it's never failed to get the job done. Most of these deer were at 30-30 ranges, puts a lot of stress on the bullet at those velocities.

Think bullet not caliber. I have since read a lot of good things about Hornady but I quit using them 30 years ago for deer, elk, etc. because of meat damage.

My son dropped his first elk this year with a 270. Bang flop 150gr NP. Laughing that a 270 is not a good elk round.

I get a kick out of these type threads.
So I shot a deer with X bullet. When I dug X bullet out of dead deer I realized that said deer was only a little dead. If I had used Y bullet he would have been extra dead.

Weird things happen on frontal shots.
Its not the bullet, its you.
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

Interesting. To hear some tell it, you can't kill Nilgai with anything less than a .375. I've not yet had the pleasure of hunting one, unfortunately. It's on the "to do" list.
If you're fixin' to put a hole in something, make it a hole to remember.

You need to ditch that worthless 270 and get a real man sized 22 K-hornet. Big guy like you should be able to handle the recoil without much problem.
