Congratulations, BMan on daughter's deer. Regretfully I Will never experience that. Neither of my girls are hunters.
Dave, the new stove looks great.
All of you hunters who have been successful receive my congratulations.

Awesome B-man. Congrats to your girl kid.
ND seems to have rearranged the shack since my last visit. Now I'll have to learn the whole lay-out over again. It might take a few brews. smile
Maybe this weekend if it works out but the little bear cub is having his 3rd birthday party on Sunday. I have cooking duties.
Hope to be done digging holes Wed as it's really getting tough. The frost doesn't slow me down a bit but the wet dirt sticking to the frozen bucket and blade is troublesome. I've moved nearly 5000 cubic yards the last day and a half in low teen temps. Tomorrow I start putting it all back. I really need to get better at taking pics.

Once again, congrats to all of the successful hunters and safe adventures to those still at it.

A few pics from the best weekend opener ever for myself and the guy I've hunted with for the last 17 or so years.

His 13-year old daughter was in the stand while dad dropped a little doe (she told him to shoot it, and he had a doe tag) opening day:

Then, she dropped the hammer on a big (genetic freak?) spike asap Sunday morning. For reference, she is 5'-10":

And she didn't mind getting dirty, doing the field-dressing, and then doing skinning/quartering back home in my shop:

I got a buck as well, so three hunters, three deer. The drive home through the snow sucked, but my friend's daughter was asking her dad about getting outfitted for her own hunting cloths, rifle, etc, as she was using our stuff for her first year.

Oh, and on an interesting note, when my buddy shot the deer, he knew it was small, and he didn't want to waste any meat, so he shot it in the neck. The last time he shot a deer in the neck was with a muzzle-loader when his daughter was one year-old....and she was up at deer camp with her mother. The only time she came up until now.

We joked about her being good luck for the neck shot, and I shot mine in the neck too (at about 20 yards, not a trick shot) just to follow the trend.

congrats!! but how come you hung it head up. so much easier to skin them head down lol. Im a head down guy, but a lot of people in the wisconsin minnesota area do hang them by the neck. I love regional differences in hunting/butchers styles

No clue. It's the way I was taught, so it's what I do. I guess we could hoist them up by the rear legs just as easily.

What makes it so much easier to skin head-down? I am always open to learning and doing things easier. smile

I dont mind hanging head up because they drain out nicer that way, especially if you hit the inside with some water (I rarely do).

But I too like skinning and quartering head down.

Head down here, too. I think it makes for far less hair on the meat.

Dave's right about draining though. I hung last year's buck head down as usual and since it was a little warm out, I stuffed a couple bags of ice in his chest cavity and wrapped an old quilt and tarp around him while he hung. His head and neck were all bloated up with water. It wasn't pretty.

First off, thank you to all you veterans and thank you for serving our great country. Second, congrats to all the successful hunters this past weekend. Especially, b-mans daughter. What a great experience for you both!

Me and mini-man had a great weekend chasing deer but we're not successful on the killing part. We did have a blast and he's hooked. Gopher and his buddy Josh cooked u a few great meals and got to stare at the ruffed grouse with the rest of us. On Sunday afternoon, Andy, jack, and I scout/hunted an area that has potential. We are going to haul in a few ladder stands this winter when it's easier to pull em on the Otter sled. Now it will be real easy! Lots of snow up that way.

Congrats to all the hunters that scored, also happy Veterans Day to all the vets. Especially "Nam" vets.
