Only two requirements is self cleaning and flat top. Anybody have any models to stay away from? Edit to add: Gotta be electric unfortunately and price about $600

I'm shopping for a range as well. I wish I only had to spend $600. Our kitchen is built with an island and the range needs be a slide-in with downdraft.
Not much to be had with those requirements.I'm looking at probably $2500

I bought a new Maytag gas range this year. 5 burner, huge oven, all electronic controls. It's bullet proof. The small burner throttles down to about 1K BTU, the largest burner is, I believe, 17K BTG. Easy to clean, a joy to use. Less than $900 at HH Gregg.

I used to hate remodeling until deciding to have a home built. Now I'm not sure which is worse.

We love our Maytag Gemini electric- it has two ovens, the top one being a small pizza/side dish size, and the range cooktop is as versatile as they come. It has been flawless so far.

I'd go gas if I could, but it isn't available here. A tank for propane has its own issues. Price is just one of them.

My Maytag Gemini is all electric. No gas. The top three on the link are examples of the new Gemini series (ours is a few years old); disregard the MSRP's, as I've never seen them sold for anywhere near that price. A real versatile oven/range. I really like the fact that the thermostats and controls are dead-on to where you set them. http://www.maytag.com/Kitchen-1/Kitchen_Cooking_Ranges-3/102120012/

Viking has some pretty good units at mid price range, but most dealers don't carry their complete line, and might have to special order, their web site is well looking at.

Stay away from Whirlpool. Every appliance I have had over the last 5 years has failed. Bought all at the same time. Compressor in the fridge went out. Oven/stove combo broke 6 times. Finally replaced it free and then it broke once. Fridgidaire freezer died.
Whirlpool makes Amana,Maytag, Fridgidaire. Be careful about brand selection as many are made by Whirlpool.
I use nothing but GE now. No problems. LG and Samsung have great reviews also.

Edit to add: Gotta be electric unfortunately and price about $600 See what www.ajmadison.com has available. Good prices on brand-name appliances. I bought my microwave oven, convection oven, gas range, washing machine, dryer, and refrigerator there in each case, the best deal that I could find.
